I am in Cambodia, on the free version. When I use the map downloaded, the map is entirely in Cambodian, and I cannot see how to switch it to English. Thanks!

Hi,

do you want to help with osmand app or LocusMap? Because this LocusMap support ;)

If you use Locus, please download Combodia LoMaps map and switch language to English - all about LoMaps and map language is mentioned in the article https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_locusmaps

Best regards

Petr

This answer is no longer correct.

Where is the map language switch menu item located now?

I think that the answer is almost correct.

Please open Menu > Maps manager > option (three dots) of map you want to change the language > Details > Map Language > select English

The section Map Language of the link in Petr post is also valid for OAM Maps, if there is a Cambodia OAM Map.

The mentioned menue entry is "Details".

Okay.

Is there a way to select languages other than english?

The actual issue i have is of arab villages/cities within the state of Israel which names are stated in Arabic (which i can't read). Would like an option to use Hebrew.

Thanks,

Amos Shani

I see. Well, there are only two options: the local name and English when it's needed to mention that only main cities, streets or places are translated into English. The local name is also used in case there is no English translation for a specific place/name.

The local name is defined by OSM mapper and the language is under the control of this mapper

I'm sorry but there are only these two alternatives. I can only suggest checking the Online Isreal map (the map is also created from OSM data) but it may better handle local languages. To add this map please open Menu > Map Manager > Online > PLUS > add online map > search for "OSM Isreal hiking map"

Thanks, Petr

Okay, thanks.

By the way, the official local language in Israel is Hebrew.

I know...

But the OSM is a community project where everyone can contribute and it's up to the local mapper what name or language he set as a "default" name for the place. When the site about OSM mapping in Isreal says:

The name=* tag should be used as the primary name, given in the language most common in the area. The name=* tag contains the name only in that common language.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Israel#Naming

When LoMap uses mentioned "name" tag as a default name.

Thanks, Petr
