How to add custom Garmin icons to Locus Map (with good importation of Icon Waypoints)

Hello, this is my first Post.

My name is Claude and I'm French.

I have read a lot of forums (here and elsewhare) and didn't find an answer to my concern.

On my PC, I have created a folder \User\My Documents\My Garmin\Custom Waypoint Symbols.

In fact on my PC : C:\Users\User\Documents\Mon Garmin\Symboles de waypoint personnalisés

I added some icons in this folder (found in https://mapicons.mapsmarker.com/)

Then, I created some waypoints in Garmin Mapsource and exported them in a GPX file.

In Locus Map, I imported this GPX file but the icon of my custom waypoints are not displayed. Only the

icons which are in Garmin group.

What can I do to be able to retrieve my Garmin Waypoint icons in Locus Map ?

I have created a zip file with the same icons and copied it to Locus/icons with no success.

I thank you in advance for any help,

Regards, Claude.

Good day Claude,

I'm worried this won't be simply possible.

How looks information about selected custom icon in GPX file exported from MapSource application?

Hello Menion, thanks a lot for your prompt answer.

I'm not sure to well understand your demand, so let me send you the following files :

In my PC : Symboles de waypoint personnalisés.zip

In Locus/Icons : PERSONNALISÉ.ZIP

Let me know if it is what you were expecting!

Regards, Claude.

Hello Claude,

thanks. As I wrote, this will not be a simply possible. I've added your icons into Basecamp application, created one point and exported it to GPX file. In this file is only information about your custom icon as:

  1. <sym>Custom 3</sym>

There is no more information. Mainly because Garmin's software do not offer any other options except one directory with own icons.

In Locus is situation more complicated and if you wants to use any custom icons in external file, Locus require following information in GPX file:

  1. <sym>file:garmin_custom.zip:Custom 3.png</sym>

So if you will be able to pack all your icons directly into zip file (no inner subdirectories) and place this file into icons directory - as you already probably did, then part of your job is done. Worst part is anyway need to change <sym> information in GPX file to mentioned structure.

I do not know if I may help here more, but at least I gave you information what is needed. In case, you need to add just a few points into Locus once or twice, this won't be a big problem. But for some sharing of points frequently, this will be quite complicated task without some own script.

Thanks again Menion for

your new answer.

I will try to set all of

that to get it functional.

I’ll come back in a little while

to give you my feedback.

Best

regards, Claude.

Hello Menion, me again,

You’re right, it’s not easy, but a little difficult possible.

Here under, is what I did.

In Garmin MapSource, I created Waypoints, tracks and routes. I save them in a file “favourites.gpx.

Then, I edit this file with Wordpad and changed

  1. <extensions>
  2. <gpxx:WaypointExtension xmlns:gpxx="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensions/v3">;
  3. <gpxx:DisplayMode>SymbolAndName</gpxx:DisplayMode>
  4. </gpxx:WaypointExtension>
  5. </extensions>

With

  1. <extensions>
  2. <locus:icon>file:Custom.zip:Custom3.png</locus:icon>
  3. </extensions>

<sym>Custom 3</sym> stays the same.

In Locus, I import this new modified file.

Yeesss! My personal icon are now on my tablet.

As you mention, it is not a too big work, I have only a few icons which are personal icons.

Again, I thank you for your help.

If anybody read this topic and wants to add more advices, I will be happy.

Regards, Claude.

Hi,

I just tried the same - importing waypoints from BaseCamp using a number of custom icons.

Unfortunately I had no success with either solution posted above. Has something changed since or is it me?

thanks

Hello Frank,

I do not know what you already tried. So if possible, attach here some file you try to use with the custom icon or describe better what you tried and I'll try to help. Anyway, if any method below worked, it should still work. There were no breaking changes.

Ok, cool, then I'll try again with a smaller test set and if it still fails I'll post the files.

Probably not today anymore, though :)

solved - "stupid user error" ;-)

I zipped the FOLDER containing my icons, not just the icons, so they were not in the zip's root and hence not found.
