Improvements in Map Items Manager

berkley shared this idea 12 years ago
Completed

Hi everybody,

I am a heavy user of "Map Items Manager". Around 50 kml files (continously growing) should be switched on and off in different situations.

I`d like to have some similar behaviour like handling as seen in tracks and points.

A good start would be, Not to switch back to the map after selecting an item.

Next small improvement would be selecting a complete subfolder, to show all kml`s that are grouped in there.

And for better overview, a pop-up-and-down for all subfolders. Similar to a file explorer.

Hope you all understand, what i try to explain? ;)

Cheers, berkley

+1. Since the Map Items Manager, currently located in the Functions Menu, is a map function, I would like to see it incorporated into the main Map Manager. Map Items deserve a home there just as much as WMS.

There is no more room in the Map Manager for another tab, however, some other menu structure should be possible. I`m saying, keep ALL map

related items in the same location.

Your idea for a hierarchal folder structure for the Map Items ist gut.

Is there a better name for Map Items?

I was also thinking about placing Map Item manager under Map manager screen some time ago. eh .. test dropbox version ;). Both system are there now so it`s possible to check which is better ...

Menion- I have been looking at Locus TEST VERSION 2.1.1.4 that you allowed me to access through Dropbox. I think that moving Map Items to the Map Manager makes much sense, but it created a fit problem; too many tabs for the available space. I see your one solution, to allow hiding of tabs. Here`s another possible solution- get rid of the "Download" tab.

Since the function provided by the Download tab applies ONLY to the Online maps, you could provide a Download BUTTON at the bottom of the Online Map page that would open the same download menu.-

Hi,

very nice idea. Only one problem ... when you start downloading, "download tab" change from list of download possibilities to screen with current download progress ...

Hmm. I would think you could make the right pages display in the proper order no matter what it started out with.

But there is a problem in the test version. After you select an area and accept, you get the layer selection page as normal. But after you select layers and initiate download, the layer/progress page disappears, and the download takes place behind the scenes.

Hi menion,

thanks for the dropbox access to 2.1.1.4 and some maps.

The new maps v0.3 look good especially for country lanes etc.

(And yes the water is red :-))

I get an error in the map manager: at vector maps selecting the manager icon below:

invalid application version (probably) too old (code:403).

Do you already expect the next version 2.2 here?

Hi,

i don`t mind, where Map Items Manager is located, because I access it through right panel ;) So what ever Menion does, please leave it accessible for right panel! :D

I like both ideas. Keeping it in the list of functions may still work, as everybody knows, where to start it. Moving it to Map Manager means some additional changes.

I take Starmans suggestion and add an additional point:

- Group the tabs "Online" and "Download" together. Only `online` maps can be downloaded. So why not have the download function right there, where you need it?

- Group "Map Items" and "WMS" together, too. They are both some kind of "Overlay" that can show additional information on the basic maps (online, personal, vector).

The reason, why I started this topic is not about location of "Map Items Manager". Its about its functionality. ;)

Hi,

you maybe don`t mind but I do. Functionality is important but usability also! I`m almost sure that many people don`t know for example where to search for calibrated map by "On-board calibrator" or for downloaded nice Australia maps from Shop. This will help a lot

calling Map Item manager from right menu will then have no sense. You can also simply tap on "Map button" which will also should you last used screen, in your case probably "Map item manager".

about grouping: I already wrote and you read - downloading tab need to be separate screen because it change (ok it will change when I fix it) depend on if you`re already downloading or not. WMS maps and Map items are quite different things. Mainly WMS maps are not usually only overlay. Most of maps is not transparent so they`re normal maps!

about functionality. If you not yet noticed, selecting item will not close Map manager screen, so it`s one part. I`ll think about next improvements also by number of votes ...

Yes, i noticed this, of course!

Thanks a lot for your investment of time.

I also noticed, that a bunch of zipped kml files also get imported. This is my new workaround untill folder structures are working. A little self-written bat-file does everything on desktop pc and dropbox with real sync cares about the rest. ;)

Another point:

Both "blank" maps (light & dark) are not really onlinemaps.

Hello Matthias,

what about current situation with "Items" tab? Satisfied? Any required improvements? :)

I have currently on mind two things that I want to do.

1. very important - support for temporary items, so in list will be first directory called "Temporary" and there will be such stuff visible on maps, possible?

2. not so important - support for a structured list of content - for example for KML files ability to select layers, disable them etc

anyway both ideas are not directly related to this idea and I have them in mind, so no extra topic is needed
