Improving GPS position with gyroscope and accelerometer

This article (in Czech) http://navigovat.mobilmania.cz/blesko...

describes a new way of significant improving of GPS position using gyroscope and accelerometer.

I don’t think it is something “new” because the idea is quite simple but I also don’t think many applications use it (maybe it is difficult to implement).

Generally gyroscope and accelerometer can tell you how the devise is moving and together with several previous GPS positions you can estimate (optimize) current GPS position quite well. Also this method can provide quite exact position even if GPS signal is lost for some time.

Can you implement it?

I didnt hear about that, but I was thinking about this kind of possibilites. I presume its algorithms are pretty complicated. I like the idea. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry, for annoying but can you please write your oppinion about this idea? Thanks.

Hello Lupus,

sure ...

on first sight, it`s for quite a long time known method, how to optimize (or better - predict) location what signal is not perfect or for a short time, your device is completely without signal (in tunnel for example)

on other side, I think that such method will take quite a lot of time, till results will be useful (because of complexity of prediction)

so generally, I like this idea, but I don`t see it now as too important to care about. But I for sure not say "no"

This concept is known for a while, and should work in theory. Its implementation is very difficult, however, and very dependent on the accuracy of the MEMS inertial sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer) found in your smartphone. All MEMS manufacturers have research team working on this for many years now (usually called sensor fusion algorithm), and as far as I know, none of them have come up with a satisfactory solution yet.

Hello Mathieu,

it is really such a problem? Hmm. To be true, even that this topic has already 11 votes, I was not checking possibilities and not even thinking about implementing for now. Are there any known pages where I may read more about this? Thank you

The gyroscope has the various usages. From outlook technical support, I read that we can use this for the 3D picture, hologram effect to the picture, GPS position estimate etc.

This is an inertial navigation system. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inertial_navigation_system

Firstly - it is quite bulky equipment with a bunch of precision sensors and the cost of tens and hundreds of the most expensive iPhones.

Secondly - its positioning accuracy is generally lower than satellite navigation, but it is completely autonomous, 100% protected from interference and does not depend on external signal sources.

So I think that in our case it's useless.

if for no other reason, it could improve the known limitation of jitter in position while actually stationary, resulting in various annoying issues.
