Include mobile signal strength when Track Recording

It would be useful to be able to include a mobile/cell signal strength value when recording a track. This could be selected under "Hardware Devices" in the recording profile. Also the option to colour the track based on this value.

I would find this useful when working in areas with marginal mobile/cell coverage. By recording a track that includes the signal strength I would be able to identify locations where I could return to to get signal.

Another potentially useful value to record would be the compass heading as determined from the devices compass.

Let me know if it is better to open a new idea.

I find that for extrem sports e.g. in mountains it is important / usefull to know where i can get no mobile net / no 3G for live tracking.

All mobile providers have some maps in internet where you get their network coverage.

Interesting could be to be able to download the map as a layer and to consider this during the track planning.

New question should be better as this idea is not connected to your question directly.

There are two options how to get online map into Locus:

a) if you know url to map tiles and map is provided in common "Slippy maps" format: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:advanced:customization:online_maps

b) if you have png/jpeg image: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_tools:calibrator

Feel free to use method that will works for you.

Hello Sel

Yes, Idea should be splitted. Because this maps are mostly incomplete and inaccurate and have nothing to do with the real and actual(!) signal strength. It's more like: "You should(!) have a good signal on this place"

Save the real(!) signal strength value into the rec. track: +1

Helpful in an emergency. So i can see the place with the last good mobile signal.

I suggested something similar about 4 years ago... a special waypoint folder that Locus simply records important system events in... one waypoint for each event... like "internet available/gone"... "gsm available/gone"... etcpp. Knowing the position of the last proper signal can possibly SAVE YOUR LIVE. Locus prefers playing with geocaches instead :-).

@menion... i certainly hope it will never happen to you... but when you're out there and break a leg and have no cell phone reception... in which direction do you crawl? further on to maybe find a signal on the next hill? or back to the point where you last had a signal? BUT WHERE THE HELL WAS THAT?

... you better be quick with that decision... a piece of bone is poking through your thigh and you're still losing blood... it's getting dark and cold... if only Locus told you where that last cell phone signal was...

but hey... at least you imported the latest and greatest geocaches in all their glory this morning... yay for that :-).

I'm glad you invest same amount of time to search in around 1 million apps on Google Play as to writing to this topic. Well, why have so much choices, when all features may be in single app, absolutely agree ...

Tracking the network signal strength is a good idea!

2sim tracking is even better ;)

I like the idea. It would also be useful to know the last point where you got mobile coverage in case you need to make an urgent call.
OruxMaps has this tool. It draws the track line according to the signal strength.
