Incorrect format of UTM coordinates?

Nico shared this question 4 years ago
Answered

When switching the format to UTM coordinates, Locus shows decimal numbers, e.g. 412245.555 5123235.111

Why are there decimals at all? UTM usually does not have decimals, or am I missing something? The coordinates with decimals would be precise to 1mm which is way above any smartphones GPS accuracy

Hello Nico,

you are correct with UTM not usually having decimals. I think I made this a long time ago because of not just inserting UTM coordinates directly, but also because of coordinate conversion. You may simply enter coordinates in lat/lon format and by a change to UTM, you get UTM coordinates and opposite of course.

You are also correct with phone accuracy. On the second side, more and more devices are close (or sometimes even better) to one-meter accuracy. Also, some special devices are able to achieve few cm accuracy ... so as I think about it, I'll leave 3 decimals, because they may be useful soon or later.

Thanks for understaning.
