John Thorn USA state topos cause problems

Buzz Boykin shared this question 5 years ago
Answered

After selecting John Thorn topo for Virginia USA then reselecting LoMap for Virginia it no longer works properly.

The streets are scaled far too large and moving around map gives loading messages on map segments. Uninstalling/reinstalling Locus Maps Pro is the only way I have found to get Virginia LoMap to work properly again.

Dear Buzz,

would you please try to change back to the any default internal theme (eq. Hike & Bike) when you re-select LoMap Virginia map?

Please let me know about progress.

Best regards

Petr

That fixed my problems. Many thanks for the quick help.

Great app, wish you could add support for geopdf. Only source here in USA are higher priced subscription services.

Again, many thanks.

Hi,

thank you for info, I'm glad that's "fixed"... We'll improve the app to select automatically the internal theme when user re-select LoMap map.

Regarding geopdf - I'm sorry but support for geopdf isn't planned at this moment. Could I ask you what data / map you'd like to import as geopdf or ahat is source for these geopdf files.

Thanks, Petr

The geopdf maps I am interested in are U. S. Forest Service Topos.  The regular USGS topos that I can get into Locus Maps are good, but most of my camping/hiking/biking is in National Forest and their topos have better trail, forest service road and shelter info than the USGS ones. Avenza maps works with them but is subscription based at 30 USD per year. It's nice, but not worth that compared to Locus with the USGS topos. I would get Neotreks from you before paying Avenza. I use your Neotreks for Shenandoah National Park and it is good. Thanks again.

You can convert georeferenced geotiff files using the program MAPC2MAPC. I use it on a PC. Very versatile program for georeferencing jpegs or converting georeferenced maps to new formats including those used by Locus Map Pro. It even lets you remove layers from pdfs, something I used with the VT county maps. I first tried to remove layers using Adobe Acrobat DC, which worked for files under 4meg but not larger. MAPC2MAPC worked for everything! I think the program costs about $20. One warning, it takes a long time to read in pdf files maybe 10 minutes. Just be patient.

Hi,

@Buzz I'm sorry for the late response (task was selected as answered and I overlooked your last post). However would you please compare any US Forest service Geotiff map with JohnThornMap - some trails, pois, etc. As I know the JohnThornMap should contains the USFS data. Please let me know if there are any missing data.

BTW: John Thorn (author of JohnThornMap) is also the developer of mentioned Mapc2mapc SW. I'd like to also mention that you can convert geotiff with qgis sw - please see: http://discuss.locusgis.com/t/how-to-import-geotiff/26

Thanks Petr
