Locus Field Notes: why automatically created after Cache import?

Hi guys,

If importing caches which I already logged in the past (found or didn't find), Locus is automatically creating a (Local) field note. This is somehow disturbing, cause these "pseudo" field notes are mixed with the "true" created field notes using Locus out in the field.

Is there a reason why creating such automatic filed notes after importing already logged Caches?

P.s. I don't use the fieldnote add-on. Just the feature of Locus itself.

Hi sonny,

as you can read here, I am not happy with this new "feature" too. But for some Locus internal reasons it has to be this way.

Hi,

there is really simple workaround, just in "Field notes" manager, disable at top option "Show also logged". Imported logs are always marked as logged, so they won't be visible here.

I may create option to disable this "automatic creation", but I still see no real reason why to do it. Imagine "Field notes manager" more like a "Logs manager", that should be better naming.

Wow, thats cool to optionally disable them! I just didn't find these option although I searched everywhere in the settings and the manual. I didn't had the idea to open the "eye"-icon ;-)

Menion, maybe you could implement some cosmetic improvements: Please put an icon with link to the filed-notes manual on top of the field notes manager-dialog. And maybe you could put the "Show also logged"-option either into another "options"-icon which could be changed even if their's no Field note present in Locus. Or maybe even more logical: (additionally) put it also into Settings > Geocaching > Field notes like where all other parameters already are.

The idea of having all found logs, DNFs, field notes within one "manager" is cool. So you are right if thinking about renaming it to something like "Logs manager". Btw: geocaching.com changed the naming of "field notes" into "Drafts" some months ago ;-)

@Menion:

Thanks for the info. Now I think you can leave this "new" import logic as it is, i. e. no change needed.

This should be off by default. Please.

If you never ever use field notes, this really looks like a bug. (Go AWAY field notes!) I was taking notes and preparing a bug report when I found this thread.

And why can't I find a "Field Notes Manager" as mentioned above, so I can turn off this blasted setting? (I've never installed the add-on; I don't want to care about Field Notes.)

BTW, I went More Functions -> Edit to see if maybe I had that hidden, and the whole panel, the one where you show or hide functions, started dancing. Yes, dancing. Something to do with thin blue horizontal scroll bars or box separators or something. Everything was highlighted in blue, all the blue rectangles were shimmying up and down and back and forth by one pixel, and - maybe this is relevant - there was a non-moving blue help panel at the top with OK, GOT IT. Kind of fun to watch.

Hello Viajero,

dancing boxes ... well I was playing one evening, nice right? ;)

Back to topic ....

  • "This should be off by default. Please." ... why?
  • "I've never installed the add-on; I don't want to care about Field Notes." ... so don't care, I still do not understand why here is a problem
  • "And why can't I find a "Field Notes Manager" as mentioned above" ... check menu > more > Geocaching Tools > Field notes manager ( will be probably renamed on "Logs manager" )

If you don't care about old logs and don't use "Field notes manager", then why this is a problem? If you use it, then in FNM simply disable display of logged notes so all will looks as before.

Ah, it was an Easter Egg. No problem then. Like I said, it's fun to watch.

Off by default because... Field Notes are something incomplete (no?), a log you haven't uploaded to the website yet. But these are finished logs, so it seems there's no purpose to create these things. I completed my task, but they came back as something incomplete. Hence, it looks like a bug. (But if you rename them "Logs", then suddenly it makes much more sense to display them on the Basic Info panel. Maybe; I don't completely understand Field Notes (/Drafts) because I never use them.

And funny, I never thought to look under Geocaching Tools. I kept looking up and down Settings / Geocaching instead. (I even tried googling to find that feature.) Anyway, I found it, thanks. But hmm, by tapping the "eye" icon, I see "Show also logged" is already off. So you can ignore my request for it to be off by default; I guess it already is.

But even so, the field notes show on the Basic Info panel, with options like Log Your Visit and Upload Field Note, both of which make it seem like a bug, because I've logged the cache years ago.

I can say, delete all Field Notes, but they come back on the next PQ import.

I can live with it. It's a quirk. Anything as massively intelligent and functional as this app is going to have the odd quirk, right? But it seemed ...unintentional, so I thought I should mention it.

I also never understood why it automatically created a Field Note whenever I logged a cache directly using the app. No, my work is done, I've sent the log. Why's this here as a Field Note too? Another quirk.

Thanks for listening. :)
