Locus Tasks on NFC tags

berkley shared this idea 11 years ago
Completed

Hi Everybody,

I`m playing around with some NFC tags right now. These things are really funny and make things more easy to handle. I got mine from here: http://goo.gl/fXGyS, but any other will work too.

For writing on the tags, I use: http://goo.gl/x0DtC

So, what do I have to do, if I want to have the following command on a NFC tag:

"get GPS position and start Locus parking service"

Just an example, there are much more useful Locus functions, that would really be great to be started (or ended), just when you hold your device over a NFC tag.

Cheers, berkley

fine, sounds good. 4 tags ordered :)

There are really many many possibilities...

For example, you can place one of them on your bluetooth GPS receiver.

the task on first touch could be: "switch bluetooth GPS on"

the second task: "switch bluetooth GPS off and use internal GPS"

If you have a car dock, simply place a tag at it. When you put your phone into the dock, Locus gets started and navigates you to your house.

If you have set up different track recording profiles for let`s say "Car", "Bike" or "Plane", you can attach a tag on the vehicles you use and start tracking with the matching recording profile automatically!

You even could create a kind of Geocaching generation with finding one cache, that you have to scan, to find the next one...

And so on... This would really give us some cool features!

eh, bad news ... implemented :)

for now with ability to store point (icon, name, short description, coordinates) and action that happen (just display, import, guide to, navigate to)

Hey this is so cool; THANKS! :)

Some suggestions/improvements:

If an user doesn`t have Locus (or an older, not supported version) installed, he should get prompted to get it from Google Play.

Save already written tags, so you can load, edit and re-use them for another one.

Read all Locus tasks from tags, so you know, what`s on this tag.

Format the tag (delete all information on it), so it is ready to receive new tasks.

Ability to choose points from category

MORE FEATURES!!! :) (guide along a track from category)

for me it`s important if here will be interest in this feature. You also probably know, that this is more for some "geeks" or people that needs to play with new stuff. Common user will probably never use it.

And if this feature will be just for you and me, then I don`t have big reason in huge improvements.

anyway more features are possible. Question is which :)

problem also is that just basic task like "turn on GPS" took 30b. I have bought NFC tag with 137b capacity, so four tasks and tag is full :). In case you`ll write there point with icon and short description, you`ll have problems. Anyway I really hope that this technology will grow fast and such small tags will be history. Tag around at least 1kb will be perfect almost on whatever ...

Hmm, yes, you are right.

For me it would be extremely useful to have a task for switching bluetooth gps on and switching bluetooth gps off.

BTW, i didn`t find a tag under 1kb here...

But anyway, let`s wait for some replies, before you put more work into it.

damn, how I hate sometimes Czech republic. Best I should be able to buy, was 4 tags, 137b size for around 14€. I`m checking your link on amazon in first post and there is five, almost 8 times bigger tags for 12€ .. egh ...

fine meanwhile ...

added - clear content of tag (by writing one empty tag)

added - reading content of tag (display only usable content of Locus for now)

added - ability to add action that handle BT GPS

i like the idea with bikes!

Idea with bikes is now possible. Ability to define enable GPS, select track recording profile, start track recording etc. is already included ;)

Sorry for repeating myself... This is awesome!!!

Guys, if you switch often between some Locus settings or if you often navigate to some same points, in general, if you often do things that you start from the same places, order yourself some NFC tags and try this feature!

Oh, and of course you need a device that has NFC...

Thanks for implementing this!

Is it possible, that people who don`t have Android could read the information from the NFC-Tags, which are written by Locus.

For example I have written a waypoint on a NFC-Tag. With Android and Locus it`s no problem to see the waypoint. Windows Phone users should then see the waypoint as message with the coordinates.

Understand.

Currently, data stored by Locus are readable only again by Locus. Before I implemented this feature, I was of course searching if exists any standard way for this, some standard format, but ...seems that nothing. Or you know any?

Anyway I will think about it. Possibility should be to let you choose in which format you want to write this information. Because at least in Czech, have NFC tag really low capacity and point in locus format and also point as text is not possible to store in single tag at once

I have and idea for a new NFC action:

Calibrate barometer to xy meter.

Use case: At home, I want to start a bike tour. I know the altitude at home. So it should be possible to create a nfc tag for:

- calibrate the barometer to a specific altitude

- select track record profile (already implemented)

- start recording (already implemented)

Thanks

Good day Michael,

I think that using NFC for such tasks was maybe interesting idea at start, but seems that it was revalued. Usage of NFC in Locus is close to zero. Your idea is nice and clear, but I think that it will be very hard to find another person who will use NFC for such task. So sorry, but from my point of view, it's too much work for very low benefit.

Hello,

As Barometer Calibration might be a bit of special usecase and requires some time to implement, I would like to ask for another NFC based feature, which should easily be implemented with just a few lines of code.

I would like you to implent the action of activating bluetooth heartrate sensor as well as bluetooth speed/cadence sensor with NFC touch. Currently, NFC is limited to activate a bluetooth gps module only.

My usecase is the following: I like to get on my bike, drive a small tour and have everything recorded. So I would like to put my phone into the mount and it immedialy starts track recording with all sensors enabled.

Best regards
