Map Calibration issue

Solved

Does the Map Calibration function in Locus Pro have a size limit? When I import my own map to calibrate (even as small as 2 meg) I get a notice that the file is too large. Any ideas? Thanks.

this is really weird. May you please send me your small file on locus@asamm.com email? I`ll look where is problem. Thanks

And I`m changing your post to a "problem"

Hi Francois,

problem still exist? Expect yes ....

may you please provide me more information? Sample, not working maps, is best, but at least map type, Locus version and some log from CatLog program that cover your action. Thanks

Evidently this is still an issue.

I tried to calibrate a paper map scanned to a jpg image of 3.8MB and pixel dimensions of 3068px wide X 6028px high, and got error msg.

Applied more jpg compression to same image to 1.8MB, still error msg.

Resampled original image to 1527px wide X 3000px high, now also 1.8MB, that worked.

So the issue is not file size, but pixel size, although I did not resample in increments to determine exact max pixel size allowed.

ah I wrongly understand whole topic. I though it`s about normal personal maps downloaded by for example MOBAC. So yes, in On-board map calibrator is limit on pixel size, not a file size!

Anyway because in Android is no defined value "how much memory is available for this task", I compute it by myself. Current dialog stops you from calibrating big images so I`ll change it to allow this, but warning that Locus may crash. So it will be on your own risk.

Hmm. Maybe every unique error message that Locus can generate should have a unique number, such as ID10T, so that I may reference documentation to learn what ID10T error message means.

Created temporary "solution" for this problem

When you`ll try to load big image that`s size is higher than values, Locus detected as save, you`ll see Yes/No dialog with

"You can also try to load such a large image. In this case is the high risk of application crash. Continue with loading?"

If there will be big interest in calibrating much bigger images, for this is needed some preprocessing and creating TAR maps from image directly in Locus. This is of course possible, but for this create new "Idea" on GetSatisfaction

For a huge picture, there are software solutions for PC.

I don`t think many people use mobiles for this.

Should be ok for a quick orientation.

so -1 for a new task ;)

Agreed. Good point gynta. If there was much need for this feature, this thread would not have remained dormant for a month.

I gave this option a try for the first time. I was able to configure a map that I found on the internet. The one that I picked to experiment with was not very accurate.

Where do people get maps for this purpose?

Thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard-

Sometimes I like to overlay a section of detailed Google Hybrid over a vector map or Google classic. I`ll use Google Hybrid in Locus and take a screenshot. I`ll then use the On-Board Map Calibrator on it.

One month ago, "elmuSSo" presented the idea of having Locus automagically georeference screenshots, which would eliminate the manual calibration-

Thank you.

I understand that taking a screen shot on an android phone requires the developer`s kit or rooting your phone. Is that true?

You can take screenshots of Locus right within Locus. They do not include the buttons, which is what you want in your case. Go to-

Main Menu> Functions> Share> Share Screen

At this point the capture should show up in-

Locus/data/photo_screenshot as a PNG

It would be nice if it made the usual shutter sound or flash a toast msg and if you had a choice between PNG and JPG.

If you continued, you would see other destinations for the screenshot, such as dropbox and email.

I have not rooted my phone, so I also use "No-Root Screenshot It", which includes the buttons in the shot. This is handy when you need to post a graphic on this forum.

The app is a kluge to set up, and resides in memory, so every time you reboot your phone, you have to hook up to your PC and reload via a utility program. Other than that, it works well.

Thank you for the information about the screenshot option for the map screens. I`m glad to know about that.

I agree with your suggested enhancements (sound, flash and choosing format). I also like the geo-reference idea.

I will have to look into the "No-Root Screenshot It" App.

Thanks again,

Richard

I have the "No-Root Screenshot It" App installed and running.

Xcellent. I use it often. When someone posts a question, idea, or problem, it draws more interest and makes it easier to understand, if the poster can include a screenshot, especially if there are language barriers. Have fun with it.
