Offline maps don't work

BaGe shared this question 5 years ago

Hi,

Now for two days struggling to get Locus working, paid version.

Managed finally to download two maps for offline use. They appear both under "offline maps" and pop up on the screen. But as soon as I switch off internet (flight modus), the maps disappear from the screen and I get the message: internet connection failed. How do I get maps working in offline mode?

I have also downloaded the Brouter app, but as far as I understand, that is only for offline navigation. The maps should be shown anyhow.

Kind regards,

Barbara

Someone who can help?

I have tried again, but it looks like the maps are not shown at all, not online and not offline. Even if I select one of the offline maps, the map which is displayed on the screen doesn't change, still the same map as from the beginning, after I downloaded the app. Tried several other maps online: nothing changes, looks like not any other map can be displayed except the starting-map. What do I wrong?

Hi Barbara,

What maps have you downloaded? LoMaps? And they are visible in the map manager, right? The selected map should be highlighted (bold, colored font). If you tap on one of the maps, the map manager closes and the map is loaded.

To check which map is actually loaded, tap on the „Information Field“ in the main screen and select „maps“. Magnification and the name of the map is then displayed in it.

Best wishes,

Thanks GuRa for your answer. Unfortunately the problem is far from solved.

I downloaded OSM outdoor bike and hike, and selected an area in south Norway, where I am and thus my gps position is.

Yes, it appeared in the mapmanager under offline maps.

Yes, if I select it, it get a green color and I get the mean screen back.

In the top it says the map OSM outdoor is in use, but not sure it's the one I downloaded, because the one on the screen contains the whole world, not just south Norway, and looks precisely the same as the very first screen.

Still everything disappears when phone in offline mode.

Also, when I try to change to another offline map, called Europe, nothing changes on the screen.

I have a 4 months old phone with latest Android.

I follow exactly all steps in the user guide, but if I can even not something so simple as getting a map offline work, I'm afraid using the app will become a nightmare. Sad from the money and many hours I spent.

Hi,

I’m pretty sure the people from the Locus Map team will solve your problem on Monday. I can assure you, that the app is really great- of course once it is working :-)

I guess that the map and/or the corresponding theme is not correctly installed. From where have you downloaded the maps?

Maybe the easiest thing would be, if you try with downloading the Norway-LoMap (Locus own maps created from OSM data). As you do that directly from the Locus app using the Locus store, you don’t have to care about placing the map and theme files in the right folders. Locus comes with 3 free LoMaps.

Best wishes,

GuRa

Thanks again GuRa.

I downloaded the two offline maps both via Locus store, selected area with the lines, selected zoom and so the download started and was completed without problems or interruptions, in the offline map Locus chooses selv. I can't see what I did wrong.

I really hope Locus can help me on Monday, because I read so many good experiences with the app.

Hi,

I see - OSM Hike&Bike is an online map, which you made available for offline use by downloading it (so forget everything I said about themes, which are needed for vector maps only). Afaik OSM Hike&Bike is not available via locus store. So I guess you followed these instructions right? As map tiles are downloaded as images for each zoom level I can imagine that downloading took quite a time. However, I just tried with a small OSM Hike&Bike map area and it seems to work fine. Maybe you also want to test with a small area around your actual position first.

And I really recommend trying LoMap vector maps from locus store (see here).

Best wishes,

GuRa

Dear Barbara,

I'm sorry for troubles. Locus doesn't really need internet connection for offline maps. I can see that you already performed several steps but I'd like to start from the begging. As @GuRa already mentioned the LoMaps are the best option how to use offline maps in the Locus. Please try following:

Open Main Menu - Locus Store - search for 'Norway LoMaps' - open detail of this item. Can you see the button 'DISPLAY', please? If yes please tap on it to display the map. In case that there is not 'DISPLAY' button, download map and use the 'DISPLAY button after downloading

Please let me know about progress

Thank you

Thanks GuRa again! Still the same problem.

I'll try your steps, Petr.

Oke, I opened Locus Store. The map you mentioned, LoMaps Norway, I had already downloaded. That was the second map I tried besides Hike&Bike. Behind this map in Locus Store is now a green hook.

But I followed your steps anyhow. I see the buttom "DISPLAY". When I use that, a map showing the whole world appears. It look likes this is the map I get on the screen all the time. I can zoom in and out.

Not sure if this is the the very first map I saw after downloading the app, as that one showed the cross country trails behind my house. After trying here and there with downloading maps, I never noticed trails any more.

Look forward to your answer!

Kind regards, Barbara

Was playing a little bit with the app to learn more functions.

And accidentally reset the app to the beginning, how it was directly after installation. The two previously downloaded maps are gone.

Mmm...maybe not so bad to start from the beginning again.

Oke, have now again found LoMaps Norway. Now no possibility to choose "DISPLAY", so I downloaded the map again.

Great, let's start from beginning :) I expect (for the next steps) that Norway LoMap map is downloaded.

  • Open Menu - Maps - Offline
  • Can you see only the folder 'Europe' that contains downloaded 'Norway' map? I mean is the only Norway map in the section of offline maps?

If yes,

  • Please open Menu - Maps - tab ONLINE - OSM Outdoor - Outdoor
  • Pan map to see your location (if you're in the Norway) or any place in the Norway and zoom-in to see the street level
  • Open Menu - Maps - OFFLINE - select (tap) on the 'Norway' map

Please let me know about progress.

Dear Petr,

I downloaded the map, followed all your steps precisely, switched off the internet, started the app again, and surprise! Looks like it works offline!

Poor you, not easy to guide a digibet who just bought her first smart phone. I will surely need more assistance while progressing with the app.

I'm preparing for a long cycle tour through Europe next year, and learning how to use a smart phone and a navigation app is one part of my preparations.

Now I go out for a little test cycle tour with Locus.

Thank you so much!

Do I now have whole Norway offline?

What if I want to prepare for Danmark while sitting at home in Norway?

Download Lomap Danmark, go to any location in Danmark, then go to offline, choose Danmark, and it should work?

Great :) I'm glad that you can see the map. I can understand that Locus can be complicated in the beginning, especially when you use smartphone for the first time. You can contact us or check the documentation in case of any troubles - https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=main

Locus offers several type of maps but the LoMaps map you downloaded from Locus Store is suitable for cycling or hiking. It's not needed to go to offline if you want to use any offline map. Doesn't matter if you're online or offline. The mentioned LoMap maps can be used when you're online or when you're offline. And yes, you have whole Norway downloaded right now. You can simply test it and pan with map to any location.

Regarding Denmark (or any other country) - you can download the LoMap for this country while sitting at home. Open Menu - Locus Store - search for 'Denmark LoMap' and download it. To display the map Open - Menu - Maps - Offline - Europe - tap on Denmark (app will ask if you want to center the map' - select 'yes' to display it. You don't need to go offline or go to any location in Danmakr. ( I asked for it in my previous post to be sure that map center is located in the Norway when you select the map)

Thank you

Regards, Petr
