One more zoom level?

tkansgar shared this question 4 years ago

Hi,

since a few versions of Locus Map Free the number of available zoom levels seems to be reduced. I can't zoom in as closely as before. Ok, because I use freely downloaded offline maps, the map tiles got very fuzzy with high zoom levels. But that's not my problem. My problem is, that it is harder to hit a particular track point, if the points are more narrow to each other. And if there are many tracks visible at the same place, it is quite more harder. I want get back only one more zoom level as currently. Could this be done please?

Hello,

I have to say that there are no changes in number of available levels for previously downloaded offline map. I'm not sure but maybe is your issue caused due to new "Auto map scale" feature that scales maps based on resolution of your device to offer better readability of text captions. You can try to turn off this feature Menu > Settings > Maps > Advanced raster map resolution > Optimize raster map resolution.

Hi Petr,

that seemed to be plausible, but unfortunatly switching off that option takes away on more zoom level instead of providing one or more. For getting the closest possible zoom level currently the option must be switched on. But before version 3.38 (I think) I could zoom in more closely than now.

Hi,

the number of zoom levels is really the same. The app only change resolution of loaded map (if settings enabled). It can give you a feeling that map has more zoom-level. However if you think that there was more detailed zoom level, you can try to download it (if online map offer detailed zoom level).

I would rather suggest to check LoMaps from Locus store that have several benefits than downloaded online map https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_locusmaps

Thank you

Something must have been changed additionally in version 3.38. To get the same closest zoom level as before with that new option switched on I now must adjust the scaling factor to 200 %. If switched off, the same is reached at 400 %. Before 3.38 I used scaling factor 100 %. Both settings variants make the downloaded map tiles too fuzzy in every selected zoom level. I now switched the option on and adjusted the scaling factor to 150 %. This seems to be a good compromise for me. But the same closest zoom level with the same scaling factor as before is not reachable with version 3.38.

Hi,

as I wrote. The new version really didn't removed any zoom level from your downloaded map. If you turn-off mentioned settings then app displays map in the same way as older versions. I can only suggest to download missing level (if available) or please download LoMaps from Locus Store. You get sharp, readable maps that have lower size and several benefits than downloaded online map.

FYI I have similar but opposite problem. (I do not require support thank you - this is FYI). After updating to 3.38 today, when I zoom out, image becomes blurry. I disabled "Menu > Settings > Maps > Advanced raster map resolution > Optimize raster map resolution" and now all is well.

Hi again,

this issue has come back with last version 3.41.0. I Had switched off Menu > Settings > Maps > Advanced raster map resolution > Optimize raster map resolution. And the scaling factor I have set to 225 %. With these settings the map details are quite good readable on my device. But hitting a track on the map screen now is once more difficult, because the closest zoom level is once again lower than before verion 3.41.0. Is it possible to get back some more close zoom levels?

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what you want to achieve. Locus doesn't remove any zoom-level in your map. If you turned-off the the settings 'Optimize raster map resolution' you get the old behavior. However would you please send me for example screenshot with description what's wrong.

Hi Petr,

I had posted a reply here today morning. But obviously the forum server has eaten it. Will wait, wether it comes back.

Hi tkansgar,

I'm sorry for troubles. There are really some troubles in the last days in our help desk system. Would you please post it again?

Hi Petr,

ok, I try again.

No, I didn't mean, that Locus Map removed any map zoom levels from my offline map. What I meant is this: I center a particular location, where many tracks start and end (my home more precisely). Then I press on the "+"-Button in the bottom bar several times, until it gets grey. OK, the map details are fuzzy now, because I have zoomed in beyond the closest available map zoom level, but this doesn't matter. But here the zooming in is limited, and this limit has been changed in the last versions. In older versions I could zoom in much more close at this point.

Do you now understand, what I'm meaning?

I tried to create a screenshot, but when pressing the buttons for this feature, an app called "Google Assistant" is started, where I cannot find a possibility to save a screenshot.

Hi tkansgar,

thank you for clarification. I think I can understand. By default Locus re-scale the map up to scale factor 1600% (in case that doesn't exist any detailed zoom-level). You can check the current scale factor when tap on top panel and select option 'Map'.

I expect that you're influenced by auto loading feature (In case that you see the gray screen). Please try following:

- open Menu - Settings - Maps - Offline - Raster maps - Automatic map loading - select 'No map auto-load'

- open Menu - Maps and select the map you want to display and try to zoom-in

Hi Petr,

> By default Locus re-scale the map up to scale factor 1600%

Has this limit been reduced recently? It seems to be so.

> You can check the current scale factor when tap on top panel and select option 'Map'.

With "top panel" you mean the top bar on the map screen? I have a map symbol there letting me select the currently displayed map. I have choice between Online and Offline maps (WMS tab I have switched off). But the current scale factor I can't see anywhere (I missed this several times already). May be it's why I have the free version. Can you describe the way to find this value more precisely? Is there possibly another way to find it?

> - open Menu - Settings - Maps - Offline - Raster maps - Automatic map loading - select 'No map auto-load'

> - open Menu - Maps and select the map you want to display and try to zoom-in

I did this both, but the maximal possible scaling remains the same. I can't see any visible changes.

Hi,

how to change the value in the top information panel is described at https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_mainscr_ctrl#information_field_2

Please select option "Map". After that zoom-in to the max possible level and please send me screenshot of the map.

Thanks, Petr

Hi Petr,

many thanks for the info about this feature. It's very useful for me, and I didn't know it till now.

As I wrote before, I don't know how to create a screenshot on my Galaxy A3 (2016). The documented buttons for this function do something other but not creating a screenshot. So I only can write here, what is displayed there now:

15 | 1600%

<MY OFFLINE MAPNAME>

I hope, this is enough for you.

So my question is still open:

> > By default Locus re-scale the map up to scale factor 1600%

> Has this limit been reduced recently? It seems to be so.

"recently" means in versions 3.41.0 and also 3.38.x. Ist it possible to increase this limit to 6400% (my guess, it was before version 3.38.x)?

Hi,

you need more than 1600%? I guess that map in such scale can't be readable. However you can use following workaround. Open Menu > Settings > Maps > Advanced features > Magnify all maps > enable it and set let's say 400%

BTW: I can suggest the app AZ Screen Recorder. It can be used for screen recording or for taking the screenshots. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hecorat.screenrecorder.free

Hi Petr,

> you need more than 1600%? I guess that map in such scale can't be readable.

Of course, you are right, the map isn't readable at this point. But I don't need to read it, I want to hit one of my nearly 50 tracks starting and ending each one in front of my home door and alltogether visible here. Before version 3.38.x I hit only that track I wanted to. Since version 3.38.x I got a list of about 10 tracks, where I could select the desired one. But now with version 3.41.0 this list contains all 50 tracks, because it's impossible to hit fewer of them. So please, please increase the limit of 1600% back to a higher value as before.

> However you can use following workaround. Open Menu > Settings > Maps > Advanced features > Magnify all maps > enable it and set let's say 400%

This isn't a good workaround, because it makes the map unreadable in every zoom level.

Hi tkansgar,

Ahh I can understand you now. I'm sorry but I have to reject your idea. This is very specific use-case and I would suggest to use different approach. You can use for example LoMaps maps (or any other vector map) where is maximal zoom-level=21. You can also organize tracks to the folders and select the track via Menu - Tracks. It isn't really ideal to re-scale the map if map become unreadable.

Thank you for understanding

Hi Petr,

ok, I must accept this, although I don't know, why that limit had to be reduced. It's a simple number, and a high value has no disadvantages in my eyes but the unreadability of the map, if someone zooms in so far.

However, Locus Map is a great app! I never will use another one for the same purpose.
