persist GPS arrow when stopped (Locus Pro)

good morning! first let me say that Locus Pro is a great app which has really improved since the last time i reviewed it about a year ago.

there is however one critical issue which prevents me from being able to use the app for overland (backcountry) 4x4 vehicle travel at all... the GPS location arrow becomes a circle whenever i stop moving, and therefore i am not able to determine which way my vehicle is aimed when i come to a stop at an intersection! this makes choosing where to turn using the map impossible.

a setting is needed that would persist the GPS arrow icon when stopped (once you have moved and a course direction is known). in many other applications, this setting is named something similiar to "continue to indicate last known course when stopped".

if you could please add this as a config file option or a setting, i could then replace my current favorite topographic/GPS apps all with Locus Pro and recommend the app to fellow overland travelers.

thank you,

Kristoffer

P.S. i am aware of the "show bearing line" option. however, this is a very distracting visual item to enable, and the compass sensor in my device is not reliable anyway. anyone that would use the app for backcountry vehicle travel would need to be able to see their last known course direction based on GPS readings - i believe persisting the arrow icon is the simplest approach for this.

Hello Kristoffer,

sorry such feature is not available. For such situation is there bearing or heading line. :) I can only offer some customization:

To use Show View > tap on rotate map on the main screen and choose "Show view". Then open GPS screen on from top right menu disable option "Use hardware compass"

Seconds solution is in customization of appereance of heading/bearing line. You can customize the color for bearing line. You can even set the semi-transparent color. To change color you need manually edit configuration file "config.cfg" that is placed in root directory of Locus on your card/memory. Please edit the parameters:

# color for the 'course bearing line' (default: #FA3232)

map_items_course_bearing_line_color=#FA3232

# color for the 'course bearing line' background (default: #FFFFFF)

map_items_course_bearing_line_color_bg=#FFFFFF

You can set transparent color using hexadecimal color code.

Thank you for understanding and please feel free to contact me in case of any troubles

Best regards

Petr

this is a feature request, i realize it is not available currently. i'm asking you to add this capability in a future version. surely you can see why it is needed after my explanation. not to mention that EVERY single other gps/topo app that i've used has this feature!

as i mentioned the hardware compass is not reliable on my device and many devices do not have hardware compasses - so your suggested customization does not help the core problem.

i'm also used to receiving a more willing response to help from developers of other apps than "sorry not possible. the end." i will continue to recommend that people NOT use Locus and instead use AlpineQuest, Backcountry Navigator, or one of the many other apps from more helpful developers.

Hi Kristoffer,

I see but your idea is quite specific and can cause also some complication. I can imagine that user will complain because arrow does not show they current heading. However I've changed your ticket into "New Idea topic". Here can other users vote for your idea. We can consider implementation based on number of votes.

Thank you

Petr

It sounds like a nice feature. My hardware compass is useless too, with phone sitting on handlebars and lots of magnetic objects to confuse it. Maybe instead of the GPS arrow turning to a circle (lost direction information for user), it remains as an arrow but the texture/ color/ outline/ transparency or other visual feature of the arrow is altered. Then we have "best of both ideas"?

Kristoffer, if you've been following the forums or help pages for a while, you'll find the Locus developers are super responsive to improving their product, just the fact that Petr has provided 2 considered replies in the space of 1 day I find amazing. For some products I've never got any reply to a question.

I experience my compass as not beeing reliable, too, so my workaround is after stopping to move, I zoom in until the track recording line is sufficient detailed to tell last direction.

I guess confusion could be reduced by 1) making that option switched off by default and 2) by showing the arrow colorful while moving and grey while stopping.
