Points/Tracks: Duplicate folder names

Ingo Rau shared this problem 8 years ago
Solved

In the Points and Tracks screens, you cannot create a folder with an existing name, but in a different group.

Example:

I have the folder "Sights" in the group "Japan". Now I wanted to make a folder "Sights" in the new group "USA" - not possible.

Is this a bug or is that a technical constraint?

Hello Ingo,

this is interesting question. Some time ago, when only a folders were possible, such requirement for unique name made sense (not 100% because in database is possible to have same names for folders so it was more my own decision).

When system of groups comes, it only extended existing folders, so every folder has information into which group it belongs. Anyway it has no influence on duplicate names.

So if there should be any change, then I see only possible discussion about allow (or keep current system) duplicate names for folders. Allow same names in different groups should only complicate things as you may simply move folders between groups.

Because till now, I never though about this and also never read complains on this system, I'm little bit lazy to change it now :). Anyway if there will be huge interest, I may think about it because technically, it should be possible after some work.

I assumed something like this as explanation.

"Huge interest" - well, hope you're not setting the bar too high. ;) I really think it would be more intuitive to enable it - after all, the groups look just like any other directory on your filesystem, and every user is used to having files with identical names in different directories.

Anyway, if you need more interest, please convert this to an Idea, so people see it better. Thx!

At present I have one country per point group. In each group/ country I have folders "houses", "POI", "misc". However because they can't be duplicate folder names the actual names are "houses 1", "houses 2", "POI 1", "POI 2" etc. It's a hack, so I voted for the idea, although not optimistic there will be huge interest. I would like the folders treated like Windows/ Android file system folder names. If you attempted to relocate a folder to another group (or non group) already with that name there would simply be an error message.

Thanks guys, understand.

As I wrote ... reasons are mainly historical. Maybe from a times when it was not possible to rename folders, because even now, you may rename one folder to already existing name, funny :).

Anyway let's consider this "issue" as FIXED. Restriction to unique names removed. Hope it won't cause any troubles, but should not. Name is not unique identification of folders, so it should not be a problem.

Thanks for push!
