Projection not working properly

Matthias Koch shared this problem 9 years ago
Not a Problem

I keep having this issue both on my phone and tablet:

1) I select "Geocaching tools"-"lines"-"projection"

2) As starting point, I pick a POI I have defined earlier

3) I select "projection" and enter a distance of e. g. 2000 metres and a bearing of 110 degrees.

Every time I repeat this, I am getting a line with a different angle around, but not quite, the angle I have selected. After repeating this for severeal times, I have a corona of rays emerging from my start POI into different angles around the originally selected angle. It is not possible for me to get a proper projection.

Indeed, in the above given example, I picked a starting POI, entered 2000 meters and 110 degrees, and before I can select "confirm", I am getting the Info 1940 meters" and "106.8" degrees - not what I entered. When I press confirm, I am getting a line that is very obviously neither 110 nor 106.8 degrees, but obviously something like 130. What's wrong here, or am I making any mistakes (don't think so, though)?

Hello Matthias,

in "Projection" screen, next to field where you enter angle, is a small button. This enable your device internal compass and value from compass (angle) is then visible in edit field.

If you do not want to use this "compass value", be sure, this button is disabled!

Please check this, because I'm almost sure, this will be source of your troubles. We do not have reported any other issues with "Projection" feature so it should work correctly.

Hello Menion, I just repeated the steps as follows:

1. I select "Line Tools"

2. As starting point, I select a previously stored POI, in this case N50°45.698 E8°48.466 (named "Station 1")

3. As end point I select "Projection"

4. The window where I can select distance and azimut appears. I notice that the starting point has changed. It is not "station 1" any more, nor the coordinates. Obviously the starting point is de-selected when the projection window comes up.

After fixing this, projection seems to wirk properly.

So, the mistake appears to be the unexpected de-selection of the starting point.

Hello Matthias,

ah here is a problem. I'll try to explain it a little bit.

When you start "Draw line", you see start and end point coordinates. Both points are same and both points are set to map center. When you tap on second point > projection, then start point is again map center. Point is that Locus use "map center" as start point always.

What is purpose of this what you are doing? Maybe there is a more simple way how to achive it. Anyway now you know what you do. Most simple in this case should be center map to your point and then start this "Draw line" feature.
