Real shadows based on elevation map

It would be great for an outdoor activity planning to have real shadows on the map. It could be done based on sun position and elevation model, see http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/139140/simulate-sun-movement
I imagine a simple control to set the daytime and the shadows would be drawn accordingly.

Can you give a use case for this? You just want the current shadow position or simulate for artificial date/time? For the latter I could see a point, e.g. in estimating nice camping spots with sunrise....

I would like to use it for: as you mentioned - finding camping spots, planning hiking on really hot days, choosing climbing spots. It would be useless without time control.
