Reset A-GPS not working?

elmuSSo shared this problem 12 years ago
Not a Problem

Today I had very strange situation.

Normally I always have perfect GPS fix time - a few seconds. But for two days I had a problems with fix, I didn`t know why. And today it was a disaster. I couldn`t acquire a fix for more then 20 minutes. I restarted the phone 2 times, I used Reset A-GPS function in Locus a three times. I used "GPS Fix" application few times. Nothing! And it was during the trip - so a disaster. Finally, I started "GPS Status" app, and this finally made me happier. Instantly, GPS Status said to me something like: AGPS data downloaded!. Withing the next 3 seconds I acquired the fix! WTF? Wy Locus did`t do that? What is the difference between Download AGPS data in GPS Status and Reset AGPS data in Locus? How they work exactly, and is there a possibility to implement in Locus, exactly the same algorithm as in GPS Status.

Hello,

I`m searching and testing and result - both methods are same!

1. found this - read second post (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/49... ), this is also what I do in Locus

2. "AGPS data downloaded!" text should, but also should not be true. There is no way to check if data was really downloaded

3. when you tap on "Reset A-GPS data", there should be a small visible connection to internet (in your top status bar), so you may see that something happen on background

why such thing happen to do ... no idea. Maybe after 20 minutes GPS finally started to work, after "Reset" from Locus and just in this time you started GPS status? :) I know, not probable ...

.......

after half an hour of searching in Android source code, I discovered that in last API 16 (Jelly beans) is only supported this command "delete_aiding_data", which is missing in Locus. This should remove all data from GPS service. I`ll try to add it and we`ll see. Otherwise there is not much I can do

.......

Hmm I also think that such tool may be useful https://play.google.com/store/apps/de...

yes something similar .. it just change source for downloading data. Don`t know if these data contains more precise information for your location, but probably yes ...

Since two months or so, my gps works very poor. The countdown in meters to a target goes from 130 meter to 90, to 45, to 10 or so ... Impossible to use it like this properly ... My girlfriend has a free version and she had no problem. I use the pro-version in a lollipop setup on my Sony M2 Aqua. The results of her nav were always quiet better than mine, but now it's even bizar ... If I record a track it results in points very far from another also, so again very poor results there too ...

Is it a setup question ? Status is always on at Locus start. What could be a solution ?

Good day Marc,

problem with you have won't be probably related to Locus itself. These problem happen sometimes on Android devices as I know, but to be true, I never read about some simple universal solution. As I know, in most cases helped factor reset or update of device to new version of Android.

Anyway before you start some experiments, I really suggest to test some other application that works with GPS. Mainly for example "Google Maps". There you will see if result will be same.

If no, then only idea I have now, is to check if you have disabled "Auto GPS-off" feature of Locus (settings > GPS).

Thanks Menion for your response,

Coming back from Tenerife with a great angina problem (yeh, it was only 27 degrees there ... :-), I was lucky to spend a whole day in bed, so I had the time figuring out now what was going on.

It is definitely a Sony problem and it seems a rather big one, a forum item already going on for months for all Sony users, which had the guts to jump to Lollipop ...Discussions and despair allover but no solution. Just a few bizar workarounds as 'put it in flightmodus' might help etc ....

So the problem is definitely NOT a Locus one, but still I would like to tell people how I did solve it.

The problem seems to be an error in 'gps.conf' in the system/etc map. So I did find another gps.conf on the net which maybe could solve it. But getting the new gps.conf on the right map is not as simple in lollipop.

So, first getting root access ... I got it through the <KingRoot>app. Easy installation, but it's not giving you write access to the system map. You need of course still some write permissions to the right map. I tried to get through <ES-Explorer>, which failed.

Still three other 'rootmanagers' like EZ ... without any succes till I finally succeeded through the free app <Root Browser>

which did a perfect 'move', after giving it permission in Kingroot. Still I was afraid that it could really go wrong by the 'size' and 'date' of the new gps.conf file, but after rebooting the system, there was no problem. First opened GPS status to get the A-GPS over the net, and opened Locus. Getting the phone out of the windows in kompas modus to a cache in the region, and within less than a minut I got about three green sats and about twelve yellow. A better result as I ever had with the Sony. So my problem seems to be solved, still have to go outside, but I am very confident in this solution. About the root access, I am a bit worried of couse, shoudnt I ? Still thinking about leaving it on and disable the write permissions of Sony ... since they might overwrite my new setup or even worse ...

So, the solution is for sure not an upgrade in software as you (Menion) suggested but most of the users did choose for a downgrade to 4.4.4 again ... which I did not consider, since Lollipop finally solved the writing access to the SD-card. Still some problems with the locus maps on the SD-card, which are not recognized at first after a reboot of the phone. (error 'no offline maps' available. In Locus you tap again on the standard directory for offline vector maps, and 'red' turns into 'black', so how wonderful is live ...

Ah, I was worried it will need something so "drastical".

Thank you for a very precise description of your solution. I believe that other users find it useful as well and me too - I'll be able to forward people with similar issue to this your description.

Thank you and enjoy finally working GPS ;).

Still doing a few improvements.

I got a lot of info out of this article. He knows what he is talking about for sure. Beside the errors yesterday in the Sony configuration, I did put out almost every NTP server out of the gps.conf, and it's so fast now. Just put the phone on, open Locus, stick it out of the window and in within a few seconds i have a fix location with lots of available sats.
