Routing with a track on a road
Answered
Hello,
I have been using Locus Map for the last couple of hours, and I had a question concerning the concept of creating a track and routing on it. What I'm looking for is an application that will allow me to add waypoints along a road for my route, and then navigate upon that route with turn-by-turn directions with street names. However, even when I create a track and add waypoints directly on top of the OSM roads layer, I do not get street names in my itinerary.
Is there an option or feature that would allow me to take my custom-made track and align or "snap" it to the roads so that I can get turn by turn directions with streets in my itinerary?
Thank you,
Thomas
Hi Thomas,
it depends on the routing service you select. Locus Map offers several services - MapQuest, YOURS, OSRM etc. Not all of them provide street names. MapQuest does so I recommend to switch to it in your Settings >Navigation > Navigation Data Source

Michal,
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. I am still getting unknown road names in my itinerary when I can even visually see on the map the names of the labeled roads. Here is my workflow so far:
1. Create a new track
2. Add waypoints along the road
3. View my saved track and attempt to route on it by electing to navigate
4. I am brought back to the map with a thicker track shown and a directional flow along the route I created with my points. However, in the top left corner there is either a question mark or just a turn signal. When I click on that signal and say "view my itinerary" I am still getting "turn left on unknown road, turn right on unknown road, etc."
5. This is happening with both OSRM and Mapquest navigation, even when I change them ahead of time in the settings.
Am I missing something here? Do the waypoints need to lie directly on top of the road? Because even the ones on top of the road do not seem to be showing up in the itinerary. Is this part of the premium version maybe?
Many thanks,
Thomas

Which routing engine are you using?

Hi Thomas,
How do you create your track? Using the "Add a new route" function? I would recommend to start with the waypoints (routepoints in this case) - launch the "add route" function, set the routing service, select means of transport and start to place waypoints - the routing service will compute the route between them. This way the navigation will take the waypoints into account and will show the street names.

Michal,
Thank you for your help so far- I realized that yes, when I set the navigation option by car before clicking along my track it snapped to the roads and generated directions for me. Thank you so much for your help, much appreciated!
