Search others: OSM Nominatim

I think it would be great to add OSM Nominatim in "Search others" http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/No...

Otherwise there is a MapQuest server with the same API without heavy restrictions: http://open.mapquestapi.com/nominatim/

Nominatim is able to run searches like "bakeries near váci utca, budapest" or "bakeries near 46.9036,19.6889" so you can put an additional checkbox below the search box with text "search near gps position" what appends "near " to the search. Great to find addresses and POIs too. Nominatim database is updated almost real-time.

Hello Roland,

MapQuest server also runs on Nominatim solution? If so, you may simply swap Google search for MapQuest search in settings

"Source for address search"

Hi Menion,

MapQuest runs 2 different search services:

1. www.mapquestapi.com) - based on proprietary data

2. http://open.mapquestapi.com/nominatim/ (server: open.mapquestapi.com) - based on OpenStreetMap

Seems like the address search can use the MapQuest proprietary API, but not the Nominatim API at MapQuest. The address search can not find POIs (eg. restaurants) what is a basic feature of the Nominatim API (if not forced into address search mode).

In Locus is currently used this base URL for MapQuest address search

http://open.mapquestapi.com/nominatim/v1/

so this should work as you expect

You may try it on your own, as url is

http://open.mapquestapi.com/nominatim/v1/search?format=json&q=Prague

Ok, you`re right, address search works with Nominatim!

Unfortunately, the address search function is optimized only for addresses, not for POI`s; First, the query "bakeries near " finds every bakery near me, but Locus shows only the name of the streets and not the name of the bakery. Second, pretty nonsense to append "near x,y" to my query when there`s a GPS..

This MapQuest API great for POI searches too, Locus should exploit it. Maybe the "Search others" menu should have a "MapQuest Nominatim" entry for such searches what (optionally) can append "near " to the user`s query and handles the reply right.

Hi Roland and Menion,

I also like the idea of searching for POI's through Nominatim, might be usefull for e.g. searching and saving rain shelters along a hiking/biking trail. Shelters are ofcourse already shown in Vector maps in certain zoom levels, but being searchable would be a usefull functionality.

For me Mapquest address search is not working at all, always returns 'no results found', Google address search works fine, will post some details in problem section...

Hello, I am a new user of locus pro and have tried to download it to my Samsung tab pro 12.2 (free version) and i just downloaded the paid version 3.6.2 to my Samsung galaxy s3 phone. I am retired and I am not sure if either download was successful. Somehow i managed to download the city i am visiting in mexico but i really don't know how i did it. I can actually see the streets and my locaton bUT that is all I can do right now. I sure could use a locus manual for dummies. Unfortunately it seems every manual or support Web site was created for people who already know the product.

I am interested in using locus pro offline when driving or walking in a city and I don'the have an Internet connection on my cell phone. Is their any company or person that has the ability to set this up for me? I live in bloomington MN.

In the meantime I will continue to study the postings here and at other places and try to get locus pro up and running. Thank you for all of your postings and I have a lot of studying to do.

Good day Terry

may I kindly ask you to create a whole new topic by "New topic" button at top of page. Simply name it for example "User manual for dummies" is missing and copy content you already wrote here.

Because it is better if we may discuss in special topic about what you wants to know, then discuss in already existing topic focused on different task. Thanks for understanding
