Searching in cs Wikipedia

Daniel Dinter shared this problem 11 years ago
Not a Problem

1. Searching in Wikipedia does not work for cs (it works for en, de, fr, es, ar, bg and probably others).

2. Field location in dialog Wikipedia search contains “Map center” but choosing anything else does not work.

ah I miss this your separate topic, perfect.

- So as I wrote in another topic, it seems that it`s some problem on wikilocation server. It`s visible here http://wikilocation.org/documentation... . I just wrote to it`s owner so we`ll see

- problem with definition of location is fixed now and will works fine in next 2.9.3 version, thank you for a report!

Menion, are you sure it is a problem of wikilocation server? It works correctly in Smartmaps...

Yes I`m sure

I`m looking into code of SmartMaps and I used there this service http://www.geonames.org/maps/wikipedi... not "Wikilocation" as I wrote above. So shortly, in SmartMaps is used different service.

Currently I don`t know why to be true :). Owner of "Wikilocation" still do not reponde, so possible solution is to switch search from "Wikilocation", to "GeoNames". We`ll see ...

Good day Daniel,

I finally get official response from owner of Wikilocation site. I thought that problem is in cz/cs exchange, but seems not

Hey Jiří,

Thanks for your email.

The "cz" and "cs" locales are one and the same as the "cz" locale simply redirects to "cs". The reason that there are so few articles is because none of the Czech articles have been marked up to use the GeoHack service which is how the WikiLocation scraper works (we look for articles that link to GeoHack and thus have lat/lng information available for us to match to the article). Unfortunately this is common in most locales outside of "en" and the only solution is for the articles themselves to be updated. We update the database every week so if you correct some articles on the "cs" version of Wikipedia you should see them appear next week.

Regards,

Ben

So it`s not problem in Locus and it`s also not a problem on WikiLocation site. It just mean that articles aren`t prepared for this service.

As I wrote, SmartMaps use different provider and it also mean this second provider use different methods. Question is, if results in SmartMaps may be generally more usable for the whole world or not.

For now, I`m marking this topic as a "not a problem", and will think about updates of this service

It is hard to believe that there are only 5 Czech articles with GeoHack while there are 55374 Slovak. However I understand it is not fault of Locus.... Thanks anyway.
