track deviation

Werner Fertig shared this problem 9 years ago
Not a Problem

I am using Locus Pro on Samsung S3mini for some time. When recording a track, I am observing significant position deviations after some time ( starting record is always ok, after certain time the deviation builds up ). This happens while walking and going by bicycle, but not with car (?!).

I checked different height settings, because I observed height deviations as well at the deviating track sections, but all different settings did not clearly influence the deviations.

I enclose 3 screenshots showing the tracks and the used ways and roads on the map ( OSM, no error on map ).

Do you have any idea, how to fix this problem?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,

Werner Fertig

Hello Werner,

basically I have to say that Locus does not have any feature that can influence the accuracy of GPS position. All information about your position are send by android system into Locus app and Locus shows or records your position based on GPS data from android system data.

Your issue is very likely caused by your device or GPS receiver. Please note that the accuracy of GPS position is about 10 meters and it's significantly influenced by trees or buildings that are around GPS device

I'm sorry but there is no way how Locus app can improve it or fix it. You can define

in recording profile

min acccuracy of points that will be recorded but this settings does not improve the raw data from system.

Thank you for understanding

I continued to check for causes anyway and I think, I was successful.

I use my S3 mini with a case containing a magnetic clip. By disabling the hardware compass ( in the Locus satelite menu ) the deviations are gone!

I do not know, how compass and GPS interact in hardware or in software, but I expect this also to be an effect in other hardware.

Now my use of this excellent software is without major compromise.

Best regards, Werner

Hello Werner,

are you sure that the mentioned inaccuracy was really caused by hardware compass? As I wrote in my previous post Locus simply get location from android system and use this location for track recording. Hardware compass does not affect the recorded location. It should be some inner logic maintained your phone but it's really strange.

Would you please check that it's the hardware compass which caused the inaccuracy?

Thank you

Hello Petr,

thank you for your comment.

All my observations have quite a long history. I started using Locus and other GPS software with a previous Samsung phone and was always satified with the precision of track recording with reference to underliing maps. When I changed to S3 mini, I experienced tracking strongly deviating from real positions on map. You may see some examples in my first post. The position is not fluctuating as with poor satelite reception, but has a kind of systematic offset.

The track always (!) starts accurate and the deviation/offset builds up along my way. This does not happen with fast movement, e.g. going by car, but when walking or biking, tracks build up a deviation.

At that stage, I started to play around with the Locus height settings, all without improvement ( Initially, I just installed Locus as everything is by default ). I also suspected the combination of GPS and glonass, which I never had before, but this cannot be influenced by Locus and the phone's settings.

So far my experiments have been done, when I reported the problem a few months ago ( see above).

Just recently, I discovered the compass setting and disabled the hardware compass, which I thought could be influenced by the magnetic clip of my phone's case. From this moment, I did no longer see systematic deviations, track accuracy is satisfactory, at least no offset. I tried this back and forth a few times. I now believe, that this is not just by chance, therefore I put my comment in the other post a few days ago, especially because I learned from there, that other Locus users have the same problem with S3 mini.

I wonder, whether other S3 mini users can confirm this observation.

Best regards,

Werner

Thank you Werner. Honestly it's weird but everything is possible. I hope that your experiences will help other users with S3. Thank you for sharing!

Hello Werner,

your explanation is the same with my experience. I compared my s3 mini with friends s3 mini, and the only problem was with my phone. Therefore I suggest that this is not feature, but fault of some s3 mini. I am currently waiting for the 3th. RMA in Samsung authorized center due to GPS inaccuracy.

1st - GPS fault was not recognized

2nd - replaced back cover, but it didn't help

3th - ??

I think that if they don't correct this issue I will replace the phone with another brand. I will definitively try your option when I have the phone back.
