Track recording does not work when system GPS is disabled

I'm on a galaxy S5 And having issues getting track recording to work when my system/Android GPS is disabled, even when I have selected "record when gps is off"... It won't record anything, but as soon as I turn the system gps back on, it works perfectly. I've tried changing various profile settings but have had no success. Is this normal?

Hi, check your system settings if you have locating via Wifi, Bluetooth or cellular networks permitted.

Yes, I do but the issue persists.

System gps off ? A power consumption concern ? Anyway for a fine resolution track record, the system gps power should be ON. By Cellular data only ? I suppose that is not what is wanted for a track record ?

Locus can't switch On/Off the GPS system power for you. Only user can. System gps On = the general "main" gps power switch, or has similar functionality as Main power switch at home. Only when (any) application (here Locus) ask for GPS data, by the apps secondary power switch, the gps module is really powered.

See powering on/off action by Locus. (Condition = The gps system main power is on !)

I'd like to avoid using GPS at times to avoid excessive power consumption. Are you saying I need to keep the 'system' GPS enabled, regardless of whether I want locus to track using just cell signal? I'm less concerned with accuracy and more concerned with running out of battery.

Ach so.... of coarse you do not have to switch on "system gps". Do you have a new position indication by cell signal only ? As immediately after a system gps power off, at my location, the new position indication by cell signal shifts 900 m away. And the reported accuracy (circle) is 2.1 km !!! Did you set the correct accuracy conditon for a trackrecord ? >> 2.1 km ? in your cell recording profile ?

Anyway I have never tested such a trackrecord by cell signal. I will give it a try later and report back. (11.59 PM now so...)

hi, that is the "issue" - check your track recording profile settings - required location accuracy. By default it is cca 100 m and network-only location may vary around a few kms. If you need to save battery, try the GPS auto-off feature (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:settings:gps#internal_gps_auto-off)

I had a track record using location by cell info only and was test by cycling ! (No gps, no wifi).

Test Record profile: "Cell Phone": Distance interval: 25m / Time interval: 10s / Required accuracy: 5.0km / Recording conditons Distance AND time / Record when GPS is off: SET. Track Record was succesfull.

My observation: No single recorded point was nearby the real locations. Is of coarse normal by triangulation system by known cell towers positions, as such is only guessing the phone position.

Position at end of cell tower range or weak rf signal, causes multiple switch overs between different cell towers, and so the track shows a lot of long range position jumps in a 'relatively short timespan. (cycling moving speed !)

Probably these annoying position track jumps can be improved by using a Time interval of +/- 360 sec (for cycling). So if still interested in such a record have some testdrives and finetune for a most optimal "Cell Phone" Record profile.

For me, as cyclist, such track record result is not usable.

Maybe your use case ? Archiving a 1000 km traveltraject by .... (so not a Car..as has possibility to power a phone)

Anyway notice a single, by cell, reported and recorded point is about 6km away from real driven location !

My recommandation: Use setting as suggested by Michael in above reply. Even with a very low resolution at least the reported position points are accurate by a reasonable "Required accuracy set".

Or use (your next) a phone with large > 4000 maH capacity (non exploding) internal battery, or no need to limit more optimal accurate record profile settings.

In zip: The original track record and a manually filtered one by removing positions with timestamps > 360 sec apart. Well at least one can see in what country I was testcycling ;-)
