Using paid maps from other apps (like Viewranger)
Gathering feedback
I bought some maps via the Viewranger store.
They have some quality maps on sale, but their app pretty much sucks compared to Locus.
It would be great to be able to consolidate my purchases in a single tool - that is, Locus. What about supporting maps from other apps (just like with Oruxmaps maps), even commercial ones?
Thanks.
Hi,
this usually depend on kind of map format, these apps use. Support for commercial map formats is always problem, because format owners have to want, not just we.
Are you able to check format of map from viewranger? Is it readable SQLite database or just binary format?

Hello, thank you for your reply.
I have no idea about what format those maps are. I will try to investigate as soon as I will have access to a computer (that will be in two weeks). In the while, could you please take a look? There are free offline maps available for download in viewranger, so maybe you'll be able to find that at a glance.
And, there is this other app, "Avenza pdf maps". The app sucks, but some maps are great. The format is, I guess... PDF!
Do you think you will be able to support those in Locus?
Many thanks for your constant feedback which is the big plus of Locus over other maps.

Understand,
I expect that maps in other apps will be protected in any way.
Currently I have quite a lot of other work, so sorry, I'll not check these apps for now. We also plan to improve content in existing Locus Store, so I hope, some good maps will be also available in Locus directly.
About PDF - this a problem for now. I wasn't able to find any simply working library that may helps Locus read PDF, but I'll try to invest some time into this.
And sure, you're welcome :)

I've just checked ViewRanger maps format, and it's a binary format unreadable by other apps. So if there is a wish for using their maps in other app, this request have to come from developers of ViewRanger itself. Sorry.

Thank you very much for your time.
Is there any chance then to have the same quality maps in the Locus store? I bought a map of northern Italy (Garda lake) and one of the Greek island of kalymnos (this one is especially well made).
I may want to buy them AGAIN to be able to use them in Locus. It is such a pity to be forced to use different apps, with different interfaces and separate personal waypoint storages! Technology should make life easier... OK sorry for the rant. :) hope to see tons of maps for locus, I am going to be a customer. Cheers.

This is exactly something, we discuss (with a lot of other users), around three years ago. Which format to use, which not etc. And result was as you wrote - every app, separate map format, separate storage. Is it even possible to make united format? This may be probably done only by a big company, like Garmin etc. But they seems not to be interested in some public format.
Anyway thanks to new Locus Store, as I wrote before, we are just discuss with few companies that provide maps. I'm sure, some will be available in Locus till end of year. And hope, that more also later ...
