Vector map text size

Do I observe right that I cannot change the text size of the vector map texts, like street names? When navigating it would be nice to have them a tad bit larger. ;-)

I heard that would be some issue with some library not Locus, but I`d appreciate any change on that to!

yes that`s correct. Current version of vector maps library do not allow to simply modify on runtime, size and style of texts. This should anyway change in new version of library that should be released in start of March. We`ll see how new system will works

In last locus version is ability to change text size of vector maps!

Also since last version, locus support custom Themes (some of them are also in Locus Shop for download). Seems to be also some problem in library Locus use, with changing of font sizes, but this will be probably fixed in one of next release. Anyway changing directly in Locus settings is working correctly now!

Menion,

i am using the Galaxy Nexus which has a 1280×720 px at 316 ppi resolution and measures 4.65 in (118 mm) diagonal. Thank you for implementing the text size in the vector maps.

The currently biggest size in the Setting "Map icon size" in the Vector Map section of the "Map-advanced" section of the settings is set to "Huge". However on this nice HD screen they are still tiny. This is very problematic specifically when in the car - but even when walking it`s really hard to read.

Is there anyway you could add one or two more bigger sizes? Or what would be a different solution?

Here are screenshots for you to see. Please remember that the screen is only 118mm diagonal so the screenshots will most probably look bigger on your computer screen.

Thank you so much,

Toby

Hi,

you`re correct. I have also GN so I can test it. When I was creating support for larger fonts, I tested it on tablet but seems that they`re still small on GN.

may you, or anyone other, suggest me correct words in English? Current I use "small, medium, big, huge" but it`s also not correct right? What I need is range of five words, so maybe "small, medium, large, larger, largest"? hmm looks weird :)

Hey Menion, thanks for your reply. Your five words sound good. I actually set the scale to 1.5 and this made it look a lot better. But i would prefer to see more "map" on the screen without having to "scale". I really love your program!

ok, so current system used four values 75%, 100%, 150%, 200%, so I`ll now change these ranges to 75, 100, 175, 250, 350. With such huge displays, you never know what will come ...

after an hour later. Ah, much better

from 50% to 500% by 25% ... so everyone can set value he wants ...

Hint:

Be careful with text size

Some Symbols ( like bus stations, bakery,... ) can`t be positioned correctly, if the text size is chosen too big.

I`ve already noticed this. Also some text are rendered incorrectly when text size is too big. Anyway as many things - I trust users that when they notice that 500% isn`t rendered perfectly, they`ll lower these values.

Anyway good is that I thanks to it, created custom component for settings such values (like percent) so it`s should be useful on some other places .. ;)

I got the same problem on a Sony Xperia Z with Android 4.2.2 running. Using Vector Maps and changing the font size does not affect the display of street names etc. See here for image examples: https://plus.google.com/1001668358685...

hello Tomasio,

sorry, I cannot confirm this problem. Did you tried to change font size of vector maps in settings of Locus http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/manu... ? Try to set some higher values (500%) to really check if this works or not.

Hello, I have a Samsung Note 2 and have the same problem; not only with Locus, but also with other navigation apps like MapFactor and Oruxmaps. OsmAnd ist working very well in this respect, but I am looking for an app more specialized for hiking.

As you can see on the screenshot, I have set the text size to the max at 300%.

I have also tried the system wide font setting, but that doesn't influence the font size on the map, either.

Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Hello Rainer,

please check if you have correctly set text size in Maps - Advanced settings, section Vector maps. Nots in the Maps - objects & styles

Menion, thanks a lot for your quick reply.

I have set the font size in the Advanced Settings to 500%, to no avail.

Oruxmaps looks the same, so I suspect it's a bug with the Samsung. Or might there be another setting, different maps or styles ...? This is quite a complex subject matter and while I am no computer novice at all, I am rather new to Android and mobile navigation. Is there some sort of check list that I could do, any other ideas?

TIA, Rainer

Hi, you're welcome.

To make fonts bigger, there are two conditions

  1. Settings in menu > settings > maps advanced. You already have this correctly
  2. Vector map - I fistly do not noticed, but on your screenshots are some raster online maps (or already downloaded, but maps from tab Online or Personal), right? What you need are maps from tab "Vector". These maps may rescale font size and also completely change appearance based on selected map theme. You may download them directly in Locus Store or download on internet from alternative sources (just search Vector maps for Locus)

There is no tab "Vector"

This has changed in the last year.

You now have Online Maps and Offline Maps. Go to "Offline".

You may find maps there that have "SQL" in the icon. Those are bitmap maps.

You are looking for Vector maps. The icon for Vector maps has "VEC" on it.

I do not see how to load a vector map.

Even for bitmap maps I want to see them in a larger font. (if necessary in lower resolution). In the current situation I cannot read anything at all on the maps and I have very good eyes.

Good day Rolf,

from your first sentence is not sure, where is a problem. Please check our manual ( for example this page ), where should be all necessary information.

To scale raster (bitmap) maps, use settings Change map resolution, which rescale whole images. For vector maps may be used settings that directly increase font size.

Hope this helps.
