Why GPS doesn`t get disabled automatically?

Markus shared this problem 11 years ago
Not a Problem

I`m want to use the the GPS-auto-off Feature when Screen is off or Locus is minimized- however it don`t seem to work on my HTC One X, which is very sad and draining my battery like hell - also it is very cumberome to always disbale/enable it manually.

GPS doesn`t turn off when I minimize and also it doesn`t turn off, when I swich of the screen (I can tell it from my battery log and from how it imediately has the signal after swiching the screen back on after quite some time)

logging is disabled of cause.

I would really appreciate your answer!

I`m using the latest version of Locus Pro on ICS 4.0.3

Hi Markus,

suggest to forget in this case on GPS-auto off feature. This is advanced feature.

What you want have to work also with "GPS auto off disabled"!

So, firstly, if GPS will be disable when you hide or minimize Locus depend on a few facts. Main settings for this is "Disable when hidden" settings ( http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/manu... ), so be sure you have it enabled (it`s by default). Then also depend on features you use. If you have enabled track recording, POI alert or some other special features, GPS should remain on because it`s required for these tasks.

So please check these settings, disable GPS auto off, any disable any advanced features if you use, and this have to work. I`m not saying there should not be a problem in any combination, but not one complain so I think you`ll have disable "Disable when hidden" settings

I have traced the problem myself. The Feature "Guide on" (which I`m using a lot!) is blocking the Auto-off feature.

This is somewhat comprehensible but not usefull I think (unlike `Navigation` for example maybe) because ther is no reason to keep GPS running with nobody looking at the screen.

I would kindly ask you to reconsider which behaivior would be more useful.

I`m really looking forward to hear your opinion on this issue!

Kind Regards, Markus

PS: I`m an advanced user - so why should I not use advanced features?

Hello Marcus,

by accident I found this topic (you have to remind next time "issue" topic where I forget to answer). Is this still happening to you? I`m just asking because GPS auto-off is first step in handling with GPS, so it has maximal priority. Even navigation, guide on, track record .. whatever ... do not have priority before GPS auto-off. So it should work in all cases ..

> ther is no reason to keep GPS running with nobody looking at the screen.

Nope, when you use a sound alert (e.g. 50 m from a cache tou are guiding to) it is essential to keep the GPS running even if the display is off !

Exactly, I use sound notification when guiding with screen off and GPS on.

I think you do not have to worry that this change in future

some features are marked as "required". If you turn off screen or minimize Locus, it check existing services that access GPS and if exists at least one "required", GPS is keeped on

I`m checking a code and these are "required" services in version 2.12.2:

- POI Alert

- Guiding & Navigation are defined in settings

- track recording - also defined in settings

- live tracking

- taking a photo

I don`t believe I`m doing something wrong, but the behaviour of my GPS auto-off had changed.

I`m:

1. Starting recording

2. Getting GPS fix

3. Pausing recording ( and guiding is also off )

4. Minimising Locus

And GPS is still ON, and draining my batteries.

This was tested many times on version 2.12.2

My settings are:

DISABLE LOCATION:

Disable when hidden: ON

Track recording: OFF

Guiding: ON

INTERNAT GPS AUTO-OFF:

GPS auto-off: OFF

This behaviour looks like a "DISABLE LOCATION/Track recording" option would be turned ON, but its not.

Did I miss something or is this a bug?

testing and works correctly for me. Aren`t you using any other function that require GPS? Live tracking, POI alert? Are you sure you`re not guiding to any point or using navigation?

i discovered I had some strange text in my top notification bar (in Android): "Location set by GPS". When I clicked on it, it took me to GPS settings of the phone. After that a normal behaviour of GPS auto turn-off reappeared. I have no clue WTF was that.

this should mean that any other program also accessed GPS ... anyway good it works now :))

That`s what I thought, but this thing was appearing after using Locus.
