Waypoints not (always) saved

Auric Goldfinger shared this problem 9 years ago
Solved

This weekend, I went geocaching. It was a 7+ hour walk and we still didn't find it (sigh)

I imported the gpx of the cache in Locus so that it was saved offline. During the multicache, I added a newly found waypoint in Locus. When we arrived there, I tapped the waypoint, edited it to add a description (so that I could remember which waypoint it was), then tapped the "geocaching" icon and added the newly found waypoint using the sidebar so that I could activate the guide line.

Today, I opened the geocache and found only three of the 10 waypoints I added during the trip: the very first one was there and the two last ones were there. All the rest is gone.

Indeed, during the cache I noticed that sometimes not all the waypoints were visible but when I arrived on a new spot and opened the geocache in Locus, all waypoints were there so I didn't pay further attention.

I tried to reproduce this problem but alas, I couldn't: all waypoints I added today (dummy, since I'm not there anymore) are still there.

But since I consider loss of data quite serious, I wanted to report it anyway.

Hi Auric

i have demand for better understanding,

> When we arrived there, I tapped the waypoint, edited it to add a description (so that I could remember which waypoint it was)

understand, presupposed you mean WPT in cache description

>then tapped the "geocaching" icon and added the newly found waypoint using the sidebar so that I could activate the guide line

this description is not clear for me, please describe it more detailed e.g. with screenshots or screencast

After editing the waypoint, I tap the button at the bottom left (02.png)

I then tap the same icon in the bottom right (03.PNG) then add the new waypoint (04.PNG)

The waypoint is there. But I noticed later when I tapped the geocache point and viewed the waypoints, not all of them were there (two or three missing). Even more later, all waypoints were back so I didn't pay attention to it, until they all were lost yesterday.

Puh, difficult task

please take a look in your settings

menue/settings/Geocaching/Keep data during import

is this option unchecked and you have done " update cache" in the meantime?

The option is enabled but I didn't update the cache.

I understand it is something difficult. Take your time ;-)

Hello Auric,

firstly @balloni55, thanks for a help. I'm trying to play with this and well ... it works.

Unfortunately here as in many other cases, only way how to fix it, is to reproduce this problem. So I need exact steps that will cause same problem.

I'll look at it carefully, but unfortunately I do not have time on long multi-caches so it is not a surprise I miss such problem even if it exists.

So if anyone notice any problem with waypoints like you, please try to remember and later write me exact step by steps, so I'll be able to simulate it.

I'm sorry for your loss, hope you enjoyed your trip and also hope you will be able to compute points again from some clues.

Yesterday, I reconstructed the entire walk and right now, I have exactly the same issue.

What I did:

  • I worked on the geocache where only four waypoints (two have the icon "reference point", one has "virtual stage" and one has Physical stage)
  • I created 12 more waypoints with names WP3 until WP14 (yes, I had to change their name because the waypoints two and three are points we found but didn't belong to the cache we're following)
  • I closed Locus, waited a few minutes, even closed Locus (from memory by swiping it out) and found they were still there. Ok for now
  • Then I started editing them. I opened the cache, I opened a waypoint from it, i tapped the coordinates so that I could modify them, then I tapped the "arrow up" icon at the bottom right and chose "edit" so that I could edit the description and saved it.
  • I went back to the waypoint list as described above (tapping the button at the bottom left) and chose the next waypoint. I edited it the same way: first the coordinates, then the description. I modified all 12 (wp3 until wp14) the same way. For some I edited the coordinates by entering the numbers, for some I chose from the map because I didn't have the exact coordinates
  • I checked and all seemed ok
  • I closed Locus. that was yesterday. today, I opened it to find only wp7 until wp14 being saved. The others are back to the situation where I left them right after "adding all 14 waypoints then close Locus"

So this is reproducable. Probably not easy to find out where this is going wrong because the last 7 are saved :-)

Hi,

2 days ago I added a similar issue about waypoints: http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/geocache-multiple-problems-with-waypoints.

Maybe they are related, what do you think?

Looks like the same indeed! I couldn't find a reproducible case with only two waypoints but it definitely is the same issue.

Hello guys,

thanks to very precise description of rvheddeg (thank you for it!) I was able to simulate same problem on own device. For my big surprise I spend on this half of second day (fortunately out is really bad weather) and result is completely rewrote background system how Locus works with geocache waypoints. I'm unfortunately aware that such big change may cause some new troubles. But hope not :). You will see in next Locus version (or in Beta version).

EDIT: description from @rvheddeg is unfortunately not visible because of merged topics

Hmm.. Thats a bug in UserResponse: the merged topic should be still accessible or copied I to the original

they are copied, but they are visible only to admins, not to common users. I've already reported this on their help desk https://help.useresponse.com/topic/list-of-merged-topics-visible-to-all , but? "Declined".

Hi Menion,

As I'm a little sad that my bug report is now hidden, I decided to post it again:

1) Open a geocache

2) Add a waypoint (in the neighborhood of the cache and make sure it is displayed on the screen =default)

3) Add in notes: 'Test' and press 'Save'

4) Close the geocache

5) Click on the waypoint and open it. Then click on the geocache icon in the lower left.

6) Check the notes (They are ok) press Cancel

7) Go back 2 times (=closing the geocache and waypoint)

8) Open the geocache

9) Open the notes and add 'Test 2' (on a new line) and press 'Save'

10) Add a second waypoint (in the neighborhood of the cache and make sure it is displayed on the screen =default)

11) Close the geocache

12) Click on the SECOND waypoint and open it. Then click on the geocache icon in the lower left.

13) Go to the notes. They are ok. Look at the waypoints, they are also ok.

14) Go back 2 times (=closing the geocache and waypoint)

15) Click on the FIRST waypoint and open it. Then click on the geocache icon in the lower left.

Now look at the notes: They display only 'Test', not 'Test Test2'

Now look at the waypoints: The second waypoint is missing!

Version 3.14.2

This problems are bothering me a really long time, but it took a while to reproduce it consistently

Hello, this thread is a couple of years old, but I seem to have the same problem. My waypoints on geocaches keep deleting themselves. Is there a way to fix it?

Hello Alexis,

hmm seems that post from @rvheddeg was "ignored", sorry for this. It is possible that this little complicated problem is still in the app. We are currently in the process of creating new screen for points/caches/waypoints so I really believe that such problem won't be there again. This change should be published somewhere around September/October 2020.
