Quick navigation with arrows through points

Tapio shared this problem 2 years ago
Solved

Hi,

small problem. When quickly navigating through trackpoints via the arrows, the lower pane resizes when there is a navigation command. So in effect we cannot quickly navigate.

I am doing this often in order to find middle of a planned track or middle of elevation gain.

Hello Tapio,

hmm, this is because you pulled the panel up to the full size. Then bottom panel adapts to the content. The solution is to reduce the panel to its partial size only. Unfortunately then isn't visible distance, understand. Heh, it is a little complicated ...

What I may offer ...

Reduced height of content by removing little bit useless "Statistics" header, switching "From start" and "To end" (as "End" is usually more interesting) and finally default height little bigger to see it all ...

Any thoughts?

Oh, I've seen your offer is already in the latest beta! - window doesn't jump now on nav wp, thx - I hope you can consider the opinions wriiten here...

Yes I have many thoughts here, I would reorder the point info much more. Wanted to open a discussion soon, with photoshops and reasoning, maybe see what the users say...

OK I cannot resist 😁

My basic assumption is, trackpoint screen is all about analysis. Skipping over many points and observing data like trackpoint time, speed, from start, to end...

Therefore the statistics must have priority and always be visible. Followed by the location data. Of biggest interest are "created" and speed there. Have to be on top of statistics. Especially "created" should always be visible. Eg lat/lon is just something you do not observe while analysing. So, to the bottom.

The track name and folder wastes analysis space. IMO could go to the bottom. I don't know if it even should be always visible. If you really think it should, just as super small text. And we still can return to track via bottom left button.

If the rows titles like "Location" could be placed vertically to the left, that would be great for space.

The big data on top IMO are not useful. Altitude most of us have displayed under the cursor/screen center. To me, a waste of space.

And, if technically possible, IMO the navigation buttons should rather be docked.

I had the same problem yesterday too. I wanted to navigate to a point and the screen kept covering the track.

Coordinates and track names / folders are not required when navigating. But if I want to see it, I should be able to call it up.

With the first click on the arrow keys, this information is shifted down into the invisible area. If I want to take a quick look, I can pull the window up and then slide it back down. Or it automatically goes down again when you let go.

"Coordinates and track names / folders are not required when navigating."

I'm happy you agree. Yes, it's a sadly and big wasted space area of the panel. I also agree, in case of the trackpoints, functionality over beauty. Saving precious space and presenting as many numbers as possible. It's about numbers here.

I'm glad Menion is willing to make changes here 👍

An additional possibility to gain more analysis space. The first time you click the arrow keys, the gaps between the information are reduced.

I know this doesn't look good, but it has to be practical. Better to be less beautiful and usable. As beautiful and unusable.

Probably technically not easy... but I like the idea.

Hi, This has also been a frustration for me. In my case with the panel pulled up I see 13mm of map for trackpoints and 3mm for navpoints so when stepping through points I always have to drag up then drag down. Maybe visible area depends on phone dimensions, resolution etc, or is there some setting affecting it?

For me most important thing right now is to see the next/prev trackpoint button row when the panel is pulled down to its smaller version. (The layout probably could benefit from other changes but that's perhaps a different issue)

What resolution do you have? No issue on 1080x2244,hd+.

My guts say, the trackpoint navigation arrows should be freed from the panel im some way. Maybe floating.

Galaxy A71: 17cm diagonal; 1080x2400:-

For trackpoints: Full panel covers ~90% of map screen

For navpoints : Full panel covers ~95% of map screen (extra Created/Updated Datetimes shown at bottom)

Galaxy Tablet Tab A 10.1: 26cm diagonal; 1200x1920:-

For trackpoints: Full panel covers ~50% of map screen

For navpoints : Full panel covers ~55% of map screen (extra "Created/Updated Datetimes shown at bottom)

So yes it does appear to be dependent on the device dimensions.

On the tablet in fact it is currently very usable. I can step through the points and see enough of the map and track.

On the phone it is difficult to use as have to continually drag down to see where the trackpoint is on the route/map.

(As an aside there seems to be a minor bug for navpoints - sometimes the bottom menu bar disappears, sometimes it is shifted up with a blank area underneath. Drag down slightly and up again refreshes it and fixes it.)

On the debate on what info to show ... personally from my own usage I do want to see the location and stats info while stepping through but they could be condensed into much smaller vertical space.

I haven't seen the beta yet so can't comment.

v4.3.3 now released. Tried it on devices mentioned above, and also an older moto G4 (16cm diag, 1080x1920) and Bluestacks. In all cases I can now see the prev/next trackpoint button row when the panel is in its smaller mode. The amount of the screen covered does vary. 33% on A71, 25% on tablet, 70% on Moto. On bluestacks lots of room so full panel is displayed on right hand side without hiding the track/map. I dont see any difference between trackpoints and navpoints.

So for myself it is fixed. though for any devices where 70% covered it might still be a problem. It probably would need redesign of the layout to reduce it further.

Jumping is gone in smallest mode, but not the two the 2nd smallest. Further improvement would ne nice as mentioned here... biggest annoyance now is the big part with track and folder name.

I have two edit... three other inquiries about the trackpoint navigation.

a) Afteer using it for a while, I think additional +10 buttons would be nicer. Press+hold works, but requires a bit of reaction to stop. Also, navigating is faster if we can very quickly press +10. There's enough horizontal space imo.

b) Shouldn't the zoom buttons move on top of the panel? Sometimes I want to zoom and zooming with 2 fingers is a no-no, because this moves map easily, but I need to keep the precise center.

c) "Jump to trackpoint" possibilities would be useful! Super useful! Currently too clunky, via the elevation graph. Jump to all interesting extrema like vmax, hmin, hmax.

I like it better now. The jumping is gone now.

I think press and hold works well. If +10, then only as an extra button. But then you can increase the jumps in Press and Hold to 30 points.

As already mentioned, the coordinates in the analysis screen are not very important. You could make the coordinates all the way down and "Created (date / time)" in this place. Created information is much more important.

Hi guys,

I'm just thinking about what to do with this task, and

Changes I just made:

  • removed line with track name & group. The track name is now visible in the subheader
  • "Created" and "Updated" times are now at top of statistics

Bigger changes should really need a bigger re-design. That's probably all I want to do with it for now. Thanks for understanding.

If "Created" will be initially visible - > Perfect for me. Thanks very much... Didn't know 'Modified" exists.

I would guess that "Speed" is the 2nd likely subject of a track analysis, 2nd most important.

Was also thinking: you could replace the "Location" headline by the points date/time.

photo
1

I'm unfortunately disappointed by the change - seems to me like it did not change the amount of information... "Created" is still just visible in the totally expanded (almost) fullscreen view.

IMO the navigation elements could go to the top section and need no headline.

Additionally: Analysis in the fully expanded view is hardly possible not only because map part is small, but because the current trackpoint on map is somewhere below the trackpoint screen.

I think it's so good. But everyone wants to do something different with this screen.
