How about adding Gottena support for offline live tracking?

Hello,

thank you for the tip, we didn't know Gottena until now and it seems like a really interesting solution for outdoors communication. On the other hand we will not sadly add the live tracking support any time soon - the Gotenna does not seem very wide spread yet especially here in Europe so we will prioritize improving or adding features that are more beneficial to a wider group of our users.

So you didn't know about this technology until now and right away make assumptions about how many people would be interested in it and make a quick judgement call on no implementing it without even having any understanding of the effort. That is pretty sad!

Maybe a little more research, feedback from users, and investigation on effort should be done before making this decision? Gotenna is designed to be integrated with apps like this and seeing how you already have live tracking baseline functionality it would likely be very easy to support Gotenna!

Hello,

it might be a bit harsh but I have made a quick assumption based on Gotenna node map and our approximate user base distribution. Also Gotenna SDK does not seem to be open-sourced and publicly available and comes with custom licence which is also something I as a developer don't like to see due to possible legal implications. And by the way the current Live Tracking implementation relies on a centralized server and HTTP communication, using a proprietary communication SDK in a decentralized mesh/distributed network might be a bit different story, I would have to dig deeper through SDK to fully assess though. I estimate that we would choose to make a completely separate add-on (due to prorietary SDK) and an integration with current live tracking would be pretty minimal. I have to admit though, that such functionality would be pretty cool and I will discuss this with Menion (lead developer) due to pure interest in possible applications of such technology. So definitely thank your for mentioning this!

To be more fair, I have changed your topic from "Question" to "Idea" type so other users could vote and post their opinion/feedback on this feature.

Thank you, I appreciate the extra effort to properly review this.

I agree with RobinK. Please develop an add on for integrating gotenna or inreach. I can't use your current buddy tracker option because it will not work offline and that is where we often ride. We will certainly pay for the add on.

2 gotennas are $180 https://gotennamesh.com/products/mesh?gclsrc=ds and at that price we can get all in our group to get them. There is even 2 pro versions now https://gotennapro.com/products/gotenna-pro?_ga=2.102025025.1306481815.1588160816-1174485578.1588160816 but to much $ for me...but the network is non centralized on all versions...OFFLINE!!!

well looks like I jumped the shark...gotenna has apparently NOT been developing the consumer version and has been heavily developing the pro and military versions...so another product has jumped in and it seems much better https://beartooth.com/

A bit expensive... https://meshtastic.org/ (https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/23406-meshtastic-lora-support) is an opensource project and uses cheap widelly available hardware modules.
