Since update to Locus v4.28.1 the map centering button has a red overlay icon with gears symbol.

What is the meaning of the overlay?

I did not find it in https://docs.locusmap.app/doku.php?id=manual:basics:locuscontrol or other documentation. By try & error, i.e. trying differen ways to tap it (short, long, double), I was unable to recognize any behavior change compared to before the update, before the overlay.

I bet many people will be asking the same unnecessary question. It has already been mentioned in https://forum.locusmap.eu discussions. A msgbox on tap of the icon would surely be better than nothing and save wasting people's time with needless confusion? I have this on a indoor-only tablet which has no GPS/ location enabled.

Hi,

the badge displays when Locus Map has no access to accurate location caused by GPS turned off in the system settings. After app start this alert emerges:

f3cee3adf417d4f645750f71b445482e

It also emerges after tapping the centering button. After tapping the button on the blue alert, the system permission displays:

Did you experience the centering button badge in other situations?

Hi Michal,

thank you for the explanation πŸ™‚ Could you please add it in the documentation, so it becomes easier to find?

Both messages do not appear on my device, probably due to some setting I do not find at the moment. Even if they appeared, they would not help me personally to understand the meaning of the overlay icon without looking into the helpdesk – but they would do so if they contained the very same icon (red circle, white gear, and in the background question mark in aiming circle).

Similar: For me personally, it would help to understand in both directions, if Satellites dialog would also show that icon nearby the text "no visible satellites".

Concerning your last question: As I did not yet know the intended meaning, I did not check the overlay also appears in other situations. I'll observe a while and post my finding.

Best regards, Georg

You can find this in the Expert Settings under Tools.

All this discussion already, could be immediately solved by just displaying a useful msgbox when the centering button has the red settings badge.

As I'm testing it, there always should be blue info at the bottom with option to turn the location back on...

Check that you have this option on in the Expert settings:

Blue Info appears always if the option in the Expert Settings (Tools section - "Notify if disabled GPS") is not deactivated. If someone misses the message, they should check this setting.

I am very glad that this can be deactivated, because I do NOT want to see the blue info every time I press the map centering button. The red badget is sufficient information. πŸ™‚

Hi Jiri, Could this red cog overlay also be hidden using expert settings? I already played around with ones mentioned here and still it shows which isn't something i want on need I actually work a lot with Locus having GPS off and don't need a constant reminder like that.

Honestly how no one thought it's too distracting like that?

I find that simple message thats shows up on first attempt to center the screen, the prompt to go to setting, is just fine as it were.

Pretty please?

I've never seen this icon before. But I think you'll get used to it. It's no different than the red recording icon.

a) not how this should work. "you'll get used to it" is the kind of disregard for the users big tech companies already employ. is this the example to follow?

b) which red record button? you see, that's the thing most things are nice and customizable, not this for som reason. But they decided to put a red distracting UI element for benefit of some narrow (i hope) group of users, which may have no clue that for GPS to work one needs a working GPS πŸ™ƒ

I think the red recording icon has obvious intent, whereas there is no means of obtaining more info what the red badge is trying to indicate. OK for expert users, but as this topic already shows, it's wasting unnecessary discussion time. Almost by definition, most users aren't aware of, and have expert settings, hidden.

Hi guys,

thanks for bringing this topic up. In case the GPS is disabled directly in the Locus Map app, these overlay icons are not necessary, and the current implementation was not exactly as I intended. New Beta version (today afternoon) will have this improved, so give it a try. Thanks.

Thanks Jiri! I'll sure want to check this out :)

will this beta be available through Play Store or APK on gdrive?

For some time, Beta are always available only over Google Drive. But this reminds me, if it's not a time to change it again back. But for now > Google Drive.

Just tried the beta:

  • the badge is not visible when obtaining location is disabled
  • badge is shown when obtaining location is enabled but system location is disabled
  • badge disappears once system location is also enabled

Now this distracting element will only show in context where it actually makes sense 😊

Thank you for taking care of this, i really appreciate it!
