Sharing from Google maps is unreliable

Jon Reed shared this problem 48 days ago

I often find a location on Google maps and then want to ride there using locus. Sharing from Google Maps works, but it's very hit and miss. Sometimes nothing happens on Locus, sometimes the dialogue in Locus pops up as the shared point is imported but it never imports and sometimes it works fine.

Usually if you have locus closed it works properly first time but then is unreliable.

Any chance of looking into this please?

Hi Jon,

could you please specify the problem in more detail? How do you share the location with Locus Map from Google Maps? What buttons do you tap exactly?

I've just tried to replicate the error and naturally it all works perfectly now! I've been on a 4 month tour of SE Asia on my bicycle and have used it probably 6 times a day to share and most of the attempts work 2nd or 3rd time. Now it seems after one support message you've cured it! 😂. Thanks!

I think it's depend on online connection. Maybe you had problems when you have been offline or you had a poor internet connection.

Hi Wolfgang,

I've been getting this again now. I've ensured I'm on a good WiFi connection and have to share things a few times to get it to work. I've also found they often share to the wrong location which is weird.

If you share with Locus closed it seems to work every time though.

I think I already had that. And I mean it depends on which Google screen I go to share from.

Could you please give us more details? We really want this to be functional so any hint on simulating the issue may help. Thanks.

I just don't know anymore. If I find some time I can try something and hopefully find a pattern

Hi Jon,

the biggest problem of this issue is, that it is almost impossible to simulate it. And without proper simulation, we can't fix it.

Try sharing this location. https://maps.app.goo.gl/eJ2HLLEhJjLQ2ZAq6

Villa Chee, I've done this 4 times on the trot now and it always located it a few Kms north of it's actual location.

The sharing appears to always work if you close Locus properly first or on the first time you share to Locus after it's been opened. After that it's hit and miss.

After sharing, the location is displayed correctly in Locus.

Any idea why mine keeps going to the wrong place? Anything I can try to rectify this? And any reason why it only does it on certain POI and then all the time. It's very weird.

No, sorry. But now I can reproduce the problem. It only occurs when you share from the Google Maps app. Then the location in Locus is actually displayed too far north. If you share from the Google Maps browser version, then it fits:

Unfortunately, we aren't able to simulate it even this way.

I tried a bit more. The location when sharing from the GM app is sometimes wrong (not always), usually a few kilometres or less. This happens more often with places in Asia, but rarely in Europe/Germany. I have just shared a bathing spot in Berlin, which was incorrectly positioned in Locus by about 80 metres.
I suspect that the app is not reliably encoding the coordinates in the link.

@graf G what phone are you using? I'm on a Samsung s23 ultra.

SG S10, Android 12

@michal It's not a Samsung thing is it?

For me, it now always works from the Maps app. But there have also been improvements in Locus in this respect since then. Maybe my error was solved back then. I don't think it was the wrong position either. As far as I know, it wasn't a position at all.

@freischneider For me sometimes it just doesn't transfer to locus, so the focus switches to locus but nothing happens, sometimes you get "Working" on locus and nothing happens and sometimes it puts the POI in the wrong place. But it also works sometimes too!

@Michal is it possibly anything to do with the map offset in Chinese maps? I've got various China maps loaded Hainan around to Vietnam and wondered if perhaps that had anything to do with my issues.

"It's not a Samsung thing is it?"

- the issue probably causes trouble on all phone makes but still, we are not capable of simulating it to the extent the cause of the problem is accurately identifiable

"is it possibly anything to do with the map offset in Chinese maps?"

- unfortunately, not. More info at https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/32673-the-map-is-broken

I have had the problem once now. I did not share from the Maps app.
I searched for a restaurant in Google and then went to Share. Only the phone number was transferred to Locus Search.
Then I went to the address and it was shared.
But nothing was shared at the next address. Then the same thing again and it was shared.
