Please add "image" to the geocache detail screen

Sonny shared this idea 19 months ago
Completed

Regarding Geocaching images: In LM3 "images" has been a main tab, like "Listing", "Waypoints", "Logs". In LM4 "images" is the only Caches' feature which is somewhat "hidden" right now in the top right menu. Please add "image" to the main screen like Logs, Favorites, Trackables, Waypoints. Maybe just with an icon and number, and if user clicks onto it, the image site opens

Hi Sonny,

thanks for the report, the issue has been replicated. Forwarded to the devs.

thanks, already working in latest LM4-version! :-)

And how about my idea about moving image-info from menu to Geocache's main screen?

Yes, interesting, Menion said he'll think about it ;)

If we are talking about images. It would be great to have a direct web link to the geocaching gallery of a certain cache. Sometimes it is useful outside to get these pictures.

Thanks Wolfgang

Very good idea! I would have needed this direkt link to a Caches' gallery within Locus a hundret times in the past I guess ;-)

Since Locus devs are currently focusing on geocaching images and its updates using GC-Offlinzier ( https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/41376-locus-gc-offlinizer-didnt-work ):

Wouldn't this be the perfect time to reconsider the idea mentioned here? Attached Images are too much hidden right now. It would be better to see them without having to click some tiny menu button. They sometimes contain important information like Spoiler photos or images needed to solve a Mystery-cache.

Hi guys,

thanks for the feedback. The geocache images have been reworked, and the changes will be in the next version:

What has changed:

  • the geocache detail now shows an "Images" row next to logs, with the number of images the cache has. Tap it to open all of them. The Images item in the geocache menu is gone, because the row replaces it.
  • One page for all images: it has separate sections for Listing, Spoilers and Logs. Buttons at the top jump straight to each section.
  • Proper titles: images show their real title and description. They are no longer labelled by a file name or a reference code. Log images are grouped by log, under the finder's name and the log date.
  • No accidental spoilers: each spoiler stays hidden until you tap it.
  • Log images are collapsed by default and load only when you open the section. Browsing the page doesn't download images you never look at.
  • Clearer when offline: an image that can't be loaded shows a short "Image not available" note instead of a broken-image icon.

Let me know how it works for you once the update is out. It is quite a big change on the background, but all should be tested and working now.

#No accidental spoilers: each spoiler stays hidden until you tap it.#

not in case spoiler is named e.g. ***Spoilerbilder S. 1/4***

Thanks Menion, the new image-line is very useful and of beautiful layout! Now all images regarding a Geocache (Listing, attachments, Logs) are in one place, which is simple reachable and not "hidden" in a sub-menu anymore.

Just a very minor improvement: Are you able to put a little "image" icon on the left of the image-number? This would make this new line even more recognizable, and also of same look like "Favorites", Trackables", "Waypoints" which have an icon on their left side too.

Menion, one thing I forgot: Background image, like https://img.geocaching.com/cache/large/dbee4999-fd46-4502-94a3-899f4b0931a3.jpg (for background-image the 640px-Version would be enough) for Geocache https://coord.info/GC83A08

It would be nice if it is loaded as well by offlinizer, but also automatically if somebody is just opening a geocaching listing - just like with attached images. (background images are also not part of a GPX/PQ, so they have to be loaded by Api like attached image - if this is even possible...)

Sometimes these background image contain important hints how to solve a Mysterie, or aboout the surroundings of a Cache's location.

Hi, hmm. I do not filter anything like "background images", so if they are not in the API, I can do nothing about it, sorry.

I see, but what about "backgroundImageUrl" ?

Hmm, you are right, good observation. It is in the body of the "cache" itself so it is not covered by the API usage in the offlinizer, but by simple import of the cache. Hmm ... done, next version. Only new caches loaded over Locus Map will have these images.

Thanks Menions, it is downloaded now! :-) But maybe some tiny things to improve:

- Please just load the 640px version of background-image: https://img.geocaching.com/cache/large/dbee4999-fd46-4502-94a3-899f4b0931a3.jpg
instead of https://img.geocaching.com/cache/dbee4999-fd46-4502-94a3-899f4b0931a3.jpg
(Reason: Unlike other Listing-images, background-images are not compressed during upload, and can be several MB in size! and they aren't as important that we need their original sized version)

- Unlike other images, Background images aren't loaded by Offlinzer-only if a GC has been imported by GPX/PQ-file. A user has to apply "Update Geocache" first before starting Offlinizer. Please make it work with Offlinizer-only too.

- Unlike other images, a background image has no title. It would be nice if Locus would name it "(Background image)" on the image-page, which makes us users understand where this image is from.

- Regarding all images: in the latest Beta v you wrote "Spoilerimage are in the same order as on geocaching.com" => this would be nice for all images (= alphabetically sorted by their title). The background-image could be set on top or end of this list (maybe end would be better, since usually background-images aren't that important for a Geocache like the other images)

Hi Sonny,

thanks, good points. In the next version:

- the background image downloads in its 640 px version

- it is named "Background image" and shown last in the listing images

- images of the cache and of each log are sorted by title, like on geocaching.com (I hope). Caches already offlinized keep their current order until you delete their images and run GC Offlinizer again

The background for caches imported from GPX/PQ stays as is. Getting it in GC Offlinizer would mean one more Live API request for every cache, which would slow down larger runs. Please use "Update geocache" first for these or better > avoid PQ and simply download caches over Locus Map directly.
