App crashes on start after update to version 4.28.1

In Progress

I couldn't start the locus app (premium gold) after update to the latest version. Error-code is 11556. Restart of mobile-phone didn't help.

I'm using samsung galaxy s22 mobile-phone, android version is 14

I have also the impression, that my automatic locus backups on dropbox are dissappeared, only one backup from 2022 is available, is this also a problem with the conversion to the new version?

Best regards

Frank

Additional hint to my problem-ticket:

I'm also using Locus on a tablet (Galaxy Tab S4, Android 10). On this device the conversion to the version 4.2.81 seems to be succsessful, all my data (tracks and points) are available . On my mobilephone i can't find any locus data on my storage, only an empty directory "menion.android.locus".

In the meantime I 've recognised why the problem caused:

My Locus app is the android standard app for zip files. If I want to open an zip, then Locus starts. But if the zip didn't contains Locus content (GPS tracks etc.) , then it can't open the zip. Normally, this is no problem. Yesterday I've try to open an zip containing some pdf files. This was the first time, that my Locus starts with the new 4.28 version. Because locus couldn't open the zip, the app was canceled and so the migration process of data to the new version was interrupted and leads to corrupt data.

I guess, the only way to resolve is to restore the data by the help of my data on the tablet.

But in general it would be better, if the Locus app could handle such use case without data loss.

Hi, sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for investigating the issue - we'll definitely have a look at it.

- make a copy of /Locus/data/database folder in your tablet

- re-install Locus map on your phone

- copy the "database" folder from your tablet to /Locus/data/ (choose "overwrite")

- restart Locus Map on your phone

Thank you, I will try it later in the evening.

After new installtion of locus I couldn't open the folder "menion.android.locus" (under android/data) with solid explorer, i have no permission to open this (my phone is running with android 14). Only by restoring data via backup manager i've got my data from the tablet on my phone. But how can I get access to /Locus/data/ folder? Where can I find it? On the tablet I have an Locus/data/database Folder on root, but not on my phone.

Unfortunately, on Android 14, the Android/data/ sector is only accessible through a connection to a PC:

- connect your phone to a PC with a USB cable

- allow USB file transfer on your phone

Ok, thank you. By that way, I've got access to the Locus database.

In the meantime I've already use the way by restore an backup file from my tablet and that worked also fine. Now I have an complete configured locus app with no data loss. I also revoked that locus is the standard app for zip files to avoid this problems in the futer.

Thanks for helping.

Same for me. Crash happens at Initialization.

In Locus Map Web it looks good

photo

That's the same for me. I guess I have to made a complete new installation of the app and then to do the restore.

Unfortunatedly I don't have a solution, since I don't get into the app to restore from backup

Hi, sorry for the inconvenience. Usually, the database migration runs smoothly but in some cases (see above) some other process interrupts it. Please do the following:

- open /Locus/ main directory in a file manager (preferably Total Commander, Solid Explorer, X-Plore or by connecting the phone to a PC)

- find the pre-migration backup file in /data/database/ folder:

10aa74d4456ec7c881edad4ba588e103

- delete the contents of the /data/database/ folder

- unzip the backup file contents into the /data/database/ folder

- restart Locus Map

Unfortunatedly my database folder does not contain that zip file.

Is there a way to reinstall keeping all settings? My Locus is highly configured. My tracks a.s.o. are also saved online in Locus Web

Would you please have a look in /Locus/backup/ folder? There should be a file with "mylibV2_conversion" in its name. Try the procedure I suggested with it.

The file was not present. I finally reinstalled Locus, too.

Manuel, did you sync the app with the cloud afterward? Did it run correctly, resp. do you have your data back in the app?

photo
1

Yes, it worked out to sync with cloud afterwards. Only preferences need to be changed again that were done after my last automated backup

Thanks for the info. And sorry for the inconvenience, there are some rare cases when the library conversion fails and we are struggling to find out why.

It is the same at my samsung s24, Locus does not start and I am not allowed to copy the backup zipfile in the database file.

photo
1

There is no "Locus_Map_before-sync.zip" and no "..._mylibV2_conersion.zip" file in my Locus folder.

I have a backup-file which I saved in a external cloud, also there is none of these 2 files.

Hi Marcus, sorry for the inconvenience. Do you have Premium Gold and your data synchronized with Locus Cloud?

photo
1

Hello,

I have a paid version. Where can I see if it is Premium Gold? Because I can not start Locus and look at it.

I make backups regularly in my own cloud (Googe Drive).

photo
1

Log in with your Locus Account to web.locusmap.app and tap the "Library" tab to see if you use Premium Gold and if you have your data synced.

photo
1

I checed - In Library are no data.

We only make automatic regular backups to our Google Drive cloud.

There is a button to upgrade to Premium Gold, so i think we have have silver.

OK, thanks for the additional info. Please try the following:

1) connect your phone to a PC with USB cable and allow data transfer

2) unzip the latest backup file on Google Drive

3) find the main /Locus/ directory (usually in Android/data/menion.android.locus/files folder) and open it

4) copy the contents of the backup file to the /Locus/ directory and allow any overwriting if required

5) disallow data transfer and disconnect the phone

6) restart Locus Map

I tried to copy backup files in locus directory, but without success. Problem is still the same.

I could not find a solution till now.

I there a possibility to downgrade to fromer version?

photo

We are sorry for the inconvenience but unfortunately, we don't have a clue what is wrong with your Locus installation. OK, let's try downgrade:

- uninstall Locus Map and make sure its main directory is deleted

- install Locus Map version 4.27.2 from our archive

- start Locus Map and restore your latest backup from your external storage

If you have the courage, you may try updating to 4.28.2 after that, perhaps the migration will be done correctly...

Same problem here, but on version 4.28.2. Asus Zenfone 10 running Android 15. The app fails on initialisation, and the 'restore from backup' option also fails. Haven't got a 'mylib_V2conversion.zip' file nor 'Locus_Map_before-sync.zip' file. But have managed to retrieve the auto-backup files. Uninstalled and reinstalled. When restoring from backup, I could restore 'Points & Tracks', 'Map Themes' and 'Custom icons/cursors', but when I added 'Settings' to the things to be restored, that led to a repeat of the crashes at initialisation.

photo

Just to be clear, in the above "the 'restore from backup' option also fails" refers to attempting to restore from the options presented on Locus's inbuilt crash screen. The text following "When restoring from backup" refers to what happened after uninstalling and reinstalling Locus.

I've also got Locus with a near identical setup on a Samsung Galaxy S10e running Android 12, and that's upgraded Locus without problems.

In the intervening period I've

  • uninstalled and reinstalled Locus 4.28.2,
  • then restored Points & Tracks', 'Map Themes' and 'Custom icons/cursors', but not 'Settings' from backup,
  • then with Locus open on two devices, manually setup all the settings to how it was before.

Took about half an hour in total. Not an ideal approach but having now got a fully functioning app, I'll leave it there.

Downgrade was successful.

Locus 4.27.2 runs perfectly now – as before.

But as soon as I try to update to 4.28.2 again, the failure occurs again. I tried it 2 times.

For now it is ok, but for the future – does that mean, I can never make update?

That would not be satisfactory.

I could copy the old existing maps back in the Locus folder. But I can not find the Elevation data. Where are they located?

photo

Elevation data is in /Locus/data/srtm/ folder.

Hello,

is there a possibility in the meanwhile that I can update without problems?

As situation is now, I could never update anymore.

photo
1

Hi, do you still use version 4.27.2? If yes:

- make a backup with the backup manager, store the backup file out of Locus Map main directory (e.g. in the system "download" folder)

- install the latest beta from https://bit.ly/lmVersionsTest

- restore the backup via backup manager

- restart Locus Map

The solution was written 30 minutes ago. Also, they did not answer the version question.

photo

Hello,

oh, there was my enquire twice, sorry.

Yes, I am using 4.27.2.

Regarding backup, if I make manual backup only POIs, Tracks, Icons and display bars will be saved. - correct?

Or do you mean another backup? (I have silver abo, it this affects the backup possibilites).

photo
1

yes, your database and settings. That is what we are trying to converge.

photo
1

Unfortunately, this version doesn't work either; the same problem as with 4.28.2.

It's always a lot of work to uninstall the new version and reinstall the old one because we have so many different maps and elevation profiles, and they get deleted each time, meaning we have to transfer them again. Also, not all settings are restored from the backup.

Is there a way to permanently access the Locus folder from a smartphone without having to do it from a computer every time?

I hope there will be a version in the future that works well again.

Marcus, sorry for the trouble, but the only way we can try to help is to convert the database for you. Please store your latest backup file on Dropbox or Google Drive, open a new private ticket and send a link to the backup file. Thanks.
