Solved

Every time I close and reopen the application, this setting goes back to the default settings, is that normal?

Hi,

thanks for reporting the issue. It has been fixed in the code, but it will take effect in the new version of the app planned for November.

Are you kidding? Why are we having to wait until November?

Until November? If you've already found the error, why not just make a new version? What's the problem?

Due to some significant changes in the background, it is not currently possible to publish a new version. At least, we'll publish a stable Beta version shortly and will try to speed up a new production version a little.

Hi all,

please install the latest beta version from our public repo at https://bit.ly/lmVersionsTest and test this feature. Hopefully, the issue has been fixed.

Hi Michal thanks for this.

I have just done a quick test of the beta this evening and it seems to be working ok now. It is possible to open the app without unlocking the phone, once again. I will try and do a more thorough test tomorrow and if I notice anything else, I’ll let you know. But so far so good. Thank you for the rapid response to the problem. Adam.

I've decided for now to not install the beta in case of other issues. Now I know what to do to avoid a recurrence of the original problem I'm happy to wait for the fully tested version in November. Thanks

What can be done to avoid the original problem? Is there a workaround?

Settings-->Controlling-->Display-->Unlock the Screen

Apparently you need to turn this on every time you use the app

Yup, this is now fixed in beta. Thanks!

After more extensive testing I can also confirm it’s definitely ok now.

(But I have found that as long as I am using this beta version, I can’t buy LoCoins which means I can’t buy maps. I’m looking forward to the fix being included in the next user release, so I can come off the beta and start buying maps again).

HI Adam, you can purchase a LoCoins voucher at http://www.locusmap.app/voucher and buy maps without Google Play.

Thanks Michal. That's good to know and it worked perfectly! Much appreciated. Adam

Oh, man. Each time I advise my wife to use Locus for navigation it's failing! Last time she used it it crashed. This time she couldn't see the map while navigating, so she switched to Google again! 🙁

I will cancel her subscription as she isn't willing to use it anymore because it never works and she isn't a tech girl, just wants to navigate.

As I had also the issue with screen getting activated but without lock screen being disabled and no map visible, I will try the beta here.

This bug is a real no-go for a navigation app and has to be fixed ASAP.

As I have written here before, the bug has been fixed and you can verify it on the latest beta version available on our public repo.

That's fine for me - thanks!

Just for clarification - issue with releasing a bug fix is the Google procedure for releasing an app?

Yes, we usually release a production version that brings more than just one bugfix.

But there's normally a difference between a normal release including fixes, feature requests etc and a bugfix release which handles an urgent issue like - in my opinion - the screen unlock issue.

I've given up recommending Locus as a navigation aid a long time ago simply because the default install isn't setup for navigation out of the box and needs a big investment in time. There are so many settings it's daunting to use and find what you need. For me I'm prepared to do this and I far prefer it's interface over say Osmand. There were many occasions in the early days the app behaved oddly and ruined some of my walks due to getting stressed out over something stupid, a piece of technology, as I'd forgotten an obscure setting.

Yes this recent bug is stupidly annoying. Why on earth would you introduce a bug knowingly or unknowingly, not tell/warn users via a notification within the app and then refuse to fix it till months later when the next version is released. No I don't want to install a beta for obvious reasons. Often the help docs are hopelessly out of date and don't match what you see on screen.

Yep, I feel your pain.

Hi, could you please tell me which part of the "help docs are hopelessly out of date"? I can update them straight away. Thanks.

Out-of-the-box settings for a working navigation setup would be very good to help new users getting familiar with Locus as it's a quite complex application.

Besides that, it would be helpful to create a Youtube video on how to configure Locus for e.g. bike or hiking navigation. The overview video (https://youtu.be/SgYIgEDpMLQ?si=oaBJrKsqq6sw2OtC) is good start but lacks the configuration.

Because Locus Map offers so many options of configuration and customization, it's impossible to create a video that would fit needs of every user. That's why there is only the "entry" video and the rest is described in the user manual at https://docs.locusmap.app.

You nemd it - it so complex and that's the issue for beginners! They don't even manage what to look for in the documentation to get it up and running.

The vidoe should NOT cover all option but the basic settings to make it work.

What I would see in this video:

- set correct system settings (battery, unlock screen, change system settings - all stuff which is not visible in the apps settings)
- create a route (a to b)
- select navigation with according profile
- start navigating

Many problems occur because of the 'under the hood' settings like battery optimization, screen unlock etc.

And after you have a basic working setup you can deep dive into its config options which are huge.

For me the appeal of Locus is precisely that it offers so much customisation. There are plenty of apps like OutdoorActive which work "straight out of the box" but for me they are hopeless because they have very limited scope for customisation. I really hope Locus don't go down the OutdoorActive-type route of simplifying everything, because then it would lose what for me (and I suspect also for other more "technical" users like me) is its unique value.

@Adam

By my comment I don't mean to cut down adjustments of the app - it's gorgeous like it is but it's not easy for beginners.

Making it work from the start would help people to dig deeper into the options and features Locus offers like no other app does!

Because Locus Map offers so many options of configuration and customization, it's impossible to create

Sorry but that's a copout and shows a lack of imagination. It would not be rocket science to put a beginner's template for say cycle navigation together either as a video or as I would prefer part of the documentation which could then be peer managed.

I'm more than happy to put forward a simple template which other newbie cyclists could use to start off their journey on Locus. Once they are comfortable then they can fine tune to their hearts content. Helping them with their first steps is vital if you want to hang on to them. As a matter of fact you could compile a series of beginner templates for various activities.

I like Locus but it's an intimidating app to use and most of the people who use it often forget what is was like to first use Locus. If it was easier for beginners to use I'd recommend it and I believe it would have further reach.

OK, could you please specify the "obscure settings"?

@Thomas Göller, could you please specify the "Out-of-the-box settings for a working navigation setup"? Btw the video contains all the points you mentioned in your commant https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/38822-re-open-app-without-need-to-unlock-screen#comment-156772, except the one about the system settings.

Thank you both.

@Michal I will delete Locus on my phone and start from scratch, note all the settings on the phone (not in the app!) I'll do and write it down.
Some settings on system level need to be done for Locus to work properly like battery optimization and other grants.

As it's feasible to export just configuration settings I will also do so. Would it make sense to offer example settings for import as templates for different use cases, like biking, hiking, car?

I hope I can come up with a kind of 'HowTo' sheet for biking as a starting point for new users.

PS: don't get me wrong - IMHO Locus is the best app out there, but for new users it's overwhelming because of the features. For longtime uses many things are obvious and they know what to change if issues appear. For new users some stuff is just frustrating and stops them using LM. I hope this can be fixed with some HowTos.

PS: This is how I navigate to the setting I talk about:

Settings / Controlling / Display / Unlock the screen

BTW, i found that that unlock screen option does not work either in the "Navigation > Link with presets > (pick a config to edit)".

After you check the option, but it never appears in the config preset panel and never applies that.
