Support for ebike with Shimano EP-8

Hi, I would request a support for ebike with Shimano EP-8.

There is a BLE connection possible, but no useful data.

The same information as E-Tube Ride would be nice, like speed, cadence, battery, power etc.

Thanks

Andy

To do this, Shimano must release the data via an interface. As far as I know, Shimano only works with Garmin. You can ask Shimano.

For me, the battery level in % would be one of the most important values. Have already searched in forums, because I wanted to switch the profile via Tasker. But so far I could not find a hint so that you can access the data.

Hi all,

As I don't have a display on my ebike (ep801 motor) I needed to have at least some parameters of my ebike visible while using Locus Maps, so I found an app on the android play store - ST RIDE. It was quite good with the options it had, but (for me at least) the split screen option didn't work, so I contacted the developer and he quickly fixed it.

I use a split screen 1/3 to 2/3 and my 2 own schemes where I have 6 parameters and with having 4 cells I can just slide it up or down with my finger. This way I can always see the mode I'm in and the battery level (%). I can also use 6 cells at the same time and they are still perfectly readable. The screen is 6.67".

It's not bad in my opinion, so I'll just leave a heads up here :)

Many thanks for that post, most helpful as I want to see percentage battery remaining etc. Can you explain how you are able to see LocusMaps as the other part of the display, rather than the default map.

Thanks

David

Please ignore my earlier post - just learned how to use split screen on Android. It’s only taken be a decade or two to discover it!

Hi, thanks for supporting e-bikes. It works perfectly with my EP8. The version log mentions extended e-bike telemetry, like remaining range. Is this available for Shimano systems?

Hi guys,

I've spend last months mostly on fixing problems with Bosch devices, so as I see, I've even forget to write more here, to this topic.

So, Shimano STEPS motors should be supported and fully working. Thanks Andreas for confirmation.

What app currently reads: cadence, assist mode (including the exact Fine Tune level), active assist profile name, gear, and battery %.

About the remaining range: in the recordings I have so far (all from one EP-801), the range value doesn't seem to be sent over Bluetooth. One value might still be it, but it only changes as the battery drains, and the recordings are too short to tell.

If you or anyone else here would like to help, a few recordings would let us check it and possibly add more values:

  • a ride of 45–60 minutes where the battery drops by at least 5%, with a note of what the display showed for range at the start and the end
  • a bike with Di2 electronic shifting, with several gear changes
  • a short climb pedalling hard while staying in one assist level
  • any other motor than EP-801 (EP8, E8000, E7000, E5000, EP6), ideally also with Walk mode used

How to record: you need the current Locus Map beta. Go to Sensors, open your Shimano bike, tap settings and turn on "Enable raw capture". Ride as usual, then attach the file Locus/Logs/sensor_….log here with a sentence about what you did and what the display showed. Report may be also send over long-click on the main menu > upload to support and sharing the upload ID.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Menoin,

I did a ride about 2 hours logging the output of the bike. I started with a range of 119km. After 1 h 24 min. I did a short climb starting with a range of 87km, at the top of the hill a range of 49 and at the end a range of 78km.

I see some more information in the shimano app, so I guess you should read this, too.

I see the total distance which is at the end of the log 8335 lm, the trip distance which is 1180 km, the max speed of 69 km/h and some more like average speed etc.

I did a walk for a minute at the end of the log.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Andreas for the log, helped a lot.

Remaining range is on the Bluetooth bus after all, my earlier captures were too short and stationary to see it move.

Your four readings matched exactly to what I was able to read. Trip and total distance matched too (1180 and 8335 km), and the 69 km/h max speed (nice).

So the next beta shows remaining range and the odometer for Shimano bikes. Your walk at the end also exposed a small bug: the assist field went blank every few seconds during walk assist. Fixed as well.

The bike turns out to send three range figures at once, one per assist mode, so Locus now picks the one matching your current mode. Eco and Trail are confirmed. Boost is worked out from the pattern but I have no recording of it yet. If anyone rides in Boost and can note the displayed range at the start and end of a ride with raw capture on, that would confirm the last piece.

Hi Menion,

I made a recording, first in Boost mode ending up with a range of 48km after a distance of about 3km, then in Trail mode starting with a range of 98km and then after a distance of about 11km I switched to Eco mode withe a range of 194km ending at km 17 with a range of 159km.

The range was always displayed correctly in all modes.

I hope this helps.

Hi Andy, thanks a lot.

My implementation perfectly confirmed against your log: Boost 48 km, Trail 98 km, Eco 194 km and 159 km at the end. Boost was the only one I'd worked out from the pattern rather than measured, so that's the last piece.

I've added your recording to our test set so a future change can't quietly break it.

We are probably done here then.
