Map resolution as individual setting of map resp. theme

Problem:

I often work with different maps for the same region, vector-maps and raster-maps. But different maps mostly need a different map resolution. Most raster maps are not made for high resolution screens (text is not readable !!), they need an enlargement of 200% or 400% or an other value. For vector maps the needed enlargement mostly is 100%, it depends on the used theme. So changing the map I always have to dive into the settings to adjust the map resolution setting, which is very inconvenient. Especially if I use an overlay-map (raster map) for lower zoom-levels together with a vector map.

Solution:

I would suggest to make the map resolution an individual setting for the map (raster maps) resp. the theme (vector maps), so the map resolution is set automatically to an appropriate value if the map or theme is changed.

Good day guys,

idea implemented in my private app version. All raster-based maps will be now automatically scaled based on DPI of your device. So on most devices, they will be scaled to 200 - 300%. Vector maps in version V3 remain same, V4 maps rendering also improved and maps will use new little bit different system, so maps will be a lot more readable.

Expected delivery is somewhere in March/April version of Locus Map (or sooner in Beta versions). You will definitely notice this in app news.

I have requested this long time ago, too.

Building a relation between enlargement and map type is one way to go.

The other option is to introduce separate resolution factors for vector maps and raster maps (in case of overlays the "dominating" map type would define the resolution factor to use, some tiebreak if exactly 50:50 - I'd prefer the overlay to dominate in this case)

And such setting needs to become part of the new preset feature. Done :-)

Hello guys,

absolutely understand this problem. I was already trying to implement this feature but had some problems with it and left it on later.

Can't find already existing idea here, so if you find any, please let me know so I may merge them.

Anyway cannot promise any progress here for now, but I'll try not to forget and look at it little bit during March as I also agree, this feature is needed more then before.

Hi Menion,

do I understand right, you need an idea how to implement this feature?

Here is my idea:

At the map-selection page, add a properties-dialog to map folders, where to set the factor for map resolution, which then is valid for all maps in this folder. The value may be stored in a side-car file at this folder or elsewhere in the setting of Locus. Of course it would be possible to have such a setting individually for each map, but I think its sufficient to have one setting for all maps in the same folder. This also would be the better solution if there are many maps in a folder which have to be handled the same way.

And additionally for vector maps, at the theme-selection page, a long tap on a theme may open a dialog to set additional properties for the theme, in this case the setting for map resolution associated with this theme.

Hello,

nono I do not need idea how to do it, thanks anyway for suggestions :). I remember that I've discuss this with Michael and few other people some time ago and I just wasn't able to find "where".

Anyway solution I see is more simple and really based only on raster/vector separation. With your solution, there may be a problems with auto-loading and generally complexity of settings.

The impact of different themes may justify a second or third thought. Not everybody is able to manipulate XML to "normalize" the view (object sizes and widths) of different themes ...
