Galileo satellites

mozzbozz shared this idea 7 years ago
Completed

The skyplot differentiates betweens GPS and GLONASS by circles and sqaures. But how will the new Galileo be displayed? As triangles? I got the the BQ Aquaris X5 Plus now which is said to be the first galileo supporting smartphone on the european market and some people report, that they can already receive the first signals. So it would be nice if the skyplot would get new symbols for them as well. (and at least the docs didn't say anything about it)

Thanks!

Good day mozzbozz,

in Locus is currently this not yet implemented. Because I do not consider this as major issue, it will be implemented once Galileo will be available in some common devices that we purchase for testing ... so I'll be able to implement and test it.

Thanks for understanding.

Gallileo satellite will be visible in next Locus Map version as rotated square, or with European flag in 3D skyplot.

Be aware that requirements are two:

  • hardware support > modern device that support Gallileo system
  • software support > Android 7.0+

Thank you very much for your feedback and the work of implementing it!

I have a NEO-M8N GNSS Bluetooth receiver sending data to Locus Map Pro. I don't see Galileo satellites in Locus Map Pro. In uCenter, u-Blox software for their receivers, there are 5 Galileo satellites shown over head. I know that Locus Map Pro parses these NMEA sentences: GGA, GLL, GSA, GSV, RMC, WPL. But which NMEA ID is Locus Map Pro looking for?

For GGA there can be: $GLGGA, $GNGGA, $GPGGA

For GLL there can be: $GLGLL, $GNGLL, $GPGLL

This message provides information specific to the satellite system identified by the first two characters of the message.

GPGGA - GPS information

GNGGA - GNSS information

GLGGA - GLONASS information

I will try to look at the NMEA files that Locus Map Pro is writing to determine Which satellite system that the NEO-M8N is receiving and outputting NMEA data. Thank You

Good day Lance,

fortunately Locus Map records all received NMEA messages. So you may use it to recorded a sample few minutes long message and send me this nmea file (stored in data/nmea directory). I may then check which lines are ignored and improve it. It is highly probable, that GNGGA and GLGGA messages are ignored in latest version of Locus Map. Thanks

Hello menion

attached you find a short NMEA sample while track recording.

M8N receiver connected with BT HC-06 to my SGS2 CM14, Locus V 3.21.1.17

While recording Locus displayed 25/29 Sats, but no Galileo sat is visible in skyplot.

Unclear for me, 29 sats in view >25 used > 5 Galileo in view, so one of these is in use of Locus ????

Question: why is BT disconnected if i switch to e.g. filebrowser or BT settings on device ?

If i switch back to running Locus, BT connect automaticly after a short time.

Thanks balloni!

till now, Locus used PRN number of satellites to decide if they are Navstar, Glonass or Galileo. This seems not work for raw NMEA data from your received because as we may see, Nastar and Galileo has both satellites with number '02'.

I'm improved system little bit so GXGSV value decide about satellite source. So in next version ...

About disconnecting: it should be exactly same as with internal GPS. When Locus is not main application in foreground and GPS is not needed for any Locus service, it's just turned off to keep battery. You may disable this behavior with settings > GPS & location > Disable when hidden (uncheck it).

Hello menion

> GPS & location > Disable when hidden

thanks, this setting solve my problem !

V 3.21.1.18

nearly perfect solved,

- Euroflag is visible for Gallileosats in 3D-skyplot

- rotated squares are displayed for Gallileosats in standart skyplot

as usual few suggestions from me...

- visibility of Euroflag isn´t good in 3D view on dark background, perhaps it´s better with a light frame

- skyplot > until now lower sat numbers are GPS and higher sat numbers are Glonass,

current Gallileo sat numbers are e.g. 1, 9, 24, 26 and in screenshot number 24 is twice GPS and Gallileo.

Idea: display sat number below strength bar in different color e.g. GPS>red, Glonass>blue, Gallileo>yellow

if sats are used, so user can differentiate

Glad it works correctly and thanks for additional tips.

I consider this "skyplot" feature and small "funny" toll in Locus, that may give quick overview about sky sitution. But to be true ... it has no big practical effect. So I believe, we may close this topic as is. Thanks!

Help to be finding this version, 3.21.1.18. As version available,  and installed is v3. 21.1

 Thank you

thank you. i need to install LMF.

Okay.  LMF,  v3. 21.1.18 works well with homebrew NEO-M8N HC-06 Bluetooth.Setting of the main  NMEA talker ID to $GP*** and $GxGSV  to constellation specific.  Showing 16-25 satellites with 5 Galileo,  indoors.

I buy it for this, can you help me?

Thanks!

Good day Luca,

from what you consider that Galileo's satellites are not used? I believe that your device will be fine and only issue is in how Locus display satellites in skyplot (GPS/satellite) screen.

May you post here a screenshot of this satellite screen after a while of usage? Thank you.

Thank you for your answer Menion!

I can't see Galileo's satellites, in skyplot there isn't european flag or rotate square.

the BQ Aquaris x5 pro has only GPS + GLONASS

?!?!?!

I buy it only for Galileo!!!

Good day Luca, thank you for a screenshot, it helps. As you may see, there are some China's satellites which are just incorrectly marked Galileo satellites ;). There is a mess in numbering of satellites anyway I've found alternative solution available since Android 7, so I've just implemented it and we will see in next version.

And @freischneider, I may confirm by specifications I found, that this device really should be able to handle also Galileo satellites.

Thank you!

Well, if I understand correctly, I see Galileo's satellites but they are marked like china's satellites.

Yes, exactly. Hope it will work fine in next version, let me know if there will be any troubles with it. Thanks

It would be nice if the legend in the user guide for GPS would explain the symbol for Galileo and BeiDou.

Hi Ivo

of course manual should be updated ....
