No email/password login to locus pro?

James P.G. Sterbenz shared this problem 6 years ago
Not a Problem

I have purchased Locus Maps Pro for my Android device (and Locus for iPad). I went to download offline maps on my Andrlid device and was told I needed to register with My Locus Profile with Facebook or Google credentials. I never use shared credentials as this is *terrible* security practice (I am a CS professor). Is it seriously not possible to login with seperate email/password, as is possible in these fora? If not, that is really bad software design and policy on your part.

I do not speak for Locus, but for myself:

CS professor should know that all text underlined, same as all text capitalized is in internet context usually considered as SHOUTING. It is really bad communication policy on your part. Do you often shout on people you do not know ?

Good day James, Libor :),

Locus Map on iPad seems to be some secret feature we are not aware. Do you have an photo please?

About accessing My Locus profile to access Locus Store:

  • access is not necessary for work with app, so it is optional, no need to worry then
  • I'm sure, that Locus Map does not need email & password. May you in this case share with me a screenshot, so we may see where is a problem?

Thank You.

And this is the Android version I'm trying to get to work now.

I was really surprised mainly because we do not have any iOS version. Locus is Android-only project.

No, normally *upper case* is shouting; underlining is for hyperlinking, and *splats* are for polite emphasis (or _underlines_ in UIs that automatically translate this to italics). I did not underline that text intentionally. I now see a formatting bar, but did not when I initially entered, @Libor, perhaps due to noscript defences. I will edit. I've no idea how long you've been online, but I was following nettiquite since the early 1980s more than a decade before RFC 1855 existed.

Do you normally make assumptions about behavoiur and accuse people you don't know @Libor?

On edit: It looks as though now that the report has changed status to 'in progress' that I can no longer edit it.

Well, some people shout by capitals, others in bold or underlining. All is abusing of metatextual information. Additionally, it was in agreement with rather non-cooperative style of the post you have chosen. So intention was very probable. I would not react just because of the formatting, it could be a mistake. Stylization is not a mistake.

I apologize for misinterpretation of your formatting.

Well, I'm not sure what you mean by non-coöperative. I was asking about the problem, but noting that what I'm seeing indicated that I'd be forced to use shared credentials. I generally don't note that I'm a prof. nor use my titles, but wanted to show that I wasn't just a n00b that didn't understand why this mattered. I'm about to post the screen shots as @Menion requested.

Peace, and cheers,

James

OK, here are the series of screenshots @Menion requested; hopefully they remain in order. I used the menu bar to select 'Maps', push the + button and get to the first screen shot. I select 'Offline maps download' assuming this will let me purchase and download maps (I want all of North America, Europe, and Asia offline on my SD card). Then I'm asked to activate MyLocus, which I do, and decline permission to contacts (of course). The last screen then only gives me the option of using my Google or Facebook credentials; this is what I do not want to do. I expected the usual option of creating an account with a userid or email and password (as for these fora). But that is not an option here.

I generate a long strong unique password for every different account and use a password manager to keep them encrypted since it is bad security policy to share credentials across applications and services. This is what I hope I can do, but I don't see how to do it here, and didn't see any way to do it with the desktop Web browser interface either.

Thanks,

James

Good day James,

thank you for your screenshots. On none of them I see direct request for name & password in Locus Map app. Anyway from what I understand ...

  • when Locus request access to Locus Store, it request access to "your contacts"
  • as is wrote in big blue hint on one screenshot, it is not request to contacts, but just to list of gmail accounts in your device
  • you have anyway declined this request, so Locus Map offer access to store over gmail or facebook account directly
  • in both cases, system web browser should open, where ( in this browser!! ) you enter your credentials and log into service. This service then over web browser send access token to Locus Map, which is then used to validate your login. It's probably known to you as oAuth2.0. So no name & password is directly used and stored in Locus Map app, only access token.

Hope it is clear, feel free to ask if there will be other questions.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough; I *want* it to ask for a new userid (or email) and password. I do *not* want to use my Facebook nor Google accounts as authentication. Of course, I understand that any maps that I purchase will have to happen with Google Pay, but that shouldn't be needed for MyLocus, and happen directly with Google using the credentials already in the phone for a Google Play download.

Good day,

my bad. When I read your question once more, I understand perfectly. Usually users complain on "Request to access contacts", so I thought it is a same problem.

In this case, you are correct. There is currently no possibility to create a separate name/password access to Locus Store and is necessary to use existing Google or Facebook account.

May you forward me to any study, why creating unique name/password combination is better then using OAuth authentication over existing Google ( or other ) account? To be true, I believe that OAuth based authentication model is one of most secure methods for common usage. Your google account may be secured over two factor authentication and all apps that you approve ( like Locus in this case ), use only temporary generated token that you may really simply revoke in settings of your account.

Hello,

I too would like to purchase maps but I dislike making explicit connections in between accounts. I don't know what the terms are. I don't want to read conditions and keep myself updated every time they change. I do not want to depend on Google or Facebook accounts and I want to be able to resign them easily and independently from other services.

Congratulations for you app which is great. I hope to ve able to purchase maps soon.

Best regards

Good day Wan,

with latest Locus Map version is already possible to login into Locus Store with email that is not Google or connected to Facebook. Give it a try.

Solved:

Hi, I've had the same problem - no option in the app to create an account using email address. I have found that the solution was this:

- make an account here to reply to this help forum by clicking on 'Leave a Comment'

- you will be prompted to register with your email address

- you will then receive an email to your nominated email account with a password given to you by Locus

- in your app, go to the Locus Store

- try to log in with that email address & password

- this didn't work for me, so an option appeared on the lines of "forgot your password" and "reset your password" for my nominated email address. I clicked the option to do this.

- you will receive an email from Locus with a link. Follow the link and choose a new password (12 characters or less)

- I was then able to log into the Locus store using my email and my new password

Hope this works for you also.
