Geocaching: Share link (without any additional info)

Lars shared this idea 5 years ago
Declined

When sharing a geocache (Share -> Share > Basic cache details) a lot of additional information about the cache is included: "Name | http://coord.info/GCxxxxx | Coordinates | Modified coordinates"

But the "normal" usecase for me is to just share the link. Could this please be added as an option or a config option, which information to share?

PS: The link should be changed to httpS as well

Good day Lars,

what is your use case, why you need this functionality? It is also possible in cache detail click on cache code value, which will directly offer some other options.

PS: "S" added, thanks.

I have the same "problem" as Lars has. For me it would be great to just get the Cache name (maybe with GC-Code in brackets).

Myself does not use the share link, I use the long press on GC-Code. But I think it's the same background task.

Wolfgang, Lars,

what is your use case? Why you need just a name, Lars needs just an Url? The generated text is really short even for simple SMS, so why is this a problem that needs an alternative solution?

Hi Menion,

my use case is the notice I write to a lot of caches. For me it's the headline for the note. With long headlines I loose a bit the overview. It's not a must have feature but it would be nice to have.

Why not add an expert feature to the ini file, where a user could define what to share?

Oki guys, thanks for the feedback. I was thinking about your request and

  1. I'm not convinced about the usability of this improvement for Locus geocachers
  2. I see no simple place where such function may be placed without complicating UI

So sorry, idea declined. For now, you have to re-use existing options. Thanks for understanding.

Usecase 1: I'm in the field and can't find the cache, want to message someone for help by sending them the link so they can click it and get to their notes quickly. No use in including extra info like name (they have to access their notes anyway and will see the name), coordinates ...

Usecase 2: A new cache was published and I want to tell someone about it (might be close to their location and they might be able to ftf). No use in including extra info like name (doesn't matter), coordinates (can't read them quickly anyway, easiest to just go to the map and see where it is) ...

In either case sending the link is a lot more useful than sending the code as copying just the code from a message on your phone is quite tedious and clicking the link is so much easier.

TBH I don't see any usecase for the current behaviour of sending "name + link + coordinates"

To be true, I do not see a problem when in both your cases, send currently generated text. Everyone who receive it, may decide how to handle it. Link is there, no problem to click it. Coordinates are there, no problem to copy&paste them (Locus itself over clipboard should handle them easily), etc.

So usecase for the current solution: it fit many various requirements.
