Support for Android 4.4.2

I have been using and loving Locus Pro for several years for geocaching.

My (outdoors) smartphone unfortunately still has Android 4.4.2 without any option to upgrade. In the last few months more and more apps pop up, which no longer support this android version (without previous notice).

I am kind of afraid that the same might happen with Locus Pro. Therefore my question: Do you have some timeline how long this Android version will still work with Locus? Hopefully for a very long time, since I'm very content with my smartphone, and would prefer not to have to upgrade - especially not on short notice.

Greetings, Keksbande

Good day Keksbande,

unfortunately, I'll not have good news for you .. well, partially. Other devs, like we, have bigger and bigger problems to keep apps running for older Androids while adding some necessary features and changes that works only on new Androids. So we are also very close to stop updating Locus for Android 4.x. Most probably since July/August this year, sorry.

Anyway good news ... Groundspeak (geocaching owner) force all developers to switch to a completely new system. Old system stops working 1. 5. 2019. So I've decided to implemented this change before we stop support Android 4. Thanks to this, the latest working Locus Map version should have fully functional Geocaching functions so it should work without any updates for many months, maybe even years.

I'm also against purchasing new devices just to get a new Android version, it sounds to me like total nonsense. Unfortunately, not just Google push quite hard to stop supporting this almost 6 years old system.

Thanks for understanding and hope, the latest working Locus Map version will be perfectly tuned and will stay working for as long as possible :).

Thanks Menion for your explanation. Although this is not what I would have loved to hear, at least I known now what to expect... I will have to think about a solution in the next few months. The risk that somethings stops working without any possibilty to get an update is not something I want to take.

At least switch off automatic update in Google Play and always keep a backup of the last working Locus apk file. My wife's is still on 4.4.2. :)

Automatic updates should not be a problem. Once we public Locus Map without support for Android 4.x, your version just do not update.

And btw. all necessary versions should be available here ... in case of need ;).

I understand but manual updates is better. First read about the changes of the update and when "the message comes" do not do the update for the Android 4.4 phone. Easy, right?

In my understanding, in the general context of Google play

, not compatible versions do not come even as an update possibility for manual updates.

Exactly. Google Play use quite a complex system for matching "app requirement" and "device capabilities" together. So there will never happen that Google Play allows updating to an incompatible version of the application.

The above discussion is the "theory". In practice I had two apps in the last few weeks which updated from Google Play store without any issue on 4.4.2 and then quit working afterwards. In both cases some kind of login issue occured which did not allow to use the app afterwards. I assume that app developers have to make sure that the app brings the correct compatibilty information to play store.

It looks more like a problem of developers and not the Google Play.

Understand your worries, but as I wrote, if there will be any problem, check mentioned page with older versions or just write to us, we will gladly help ;).
