Organising photos in my gallery and then Locus does not show them anymore

We shoot many hiking photos in Locus and organise these points with photo in different folders/maps within Locus. Now the photos themselves are effectively in one folder named ..Locus/data/media/photo This works great because during a hike in a familiar area the older photos allready show on the map.

However, back home or in the evening it is more convenient to lookup the photos in the gallery. We usually organise our longer trips and/or holidays in a seperate folder and do this in the gallery.

Now comes the problem, after moving a photo from "photo"(=Locus/data/media/photo) to say a newly created folder in the gallery named "2021holiday spain" this photo cannot be viewed anymore through Locus. The thumbnail is there, even the path name is changed but the photo does not open when tapping on it.

The only workaroud I found is not "moving" but "copying" that photo within the gallery to its new folder. But then I haven all my photos double on my phone: not good.

So, any tips? Actually it would be great if the Locus points folder names were shown as foto folders in any gallery.

Hi Henk,

Locus Map stores photos to Locus/data/media/photo folder and each point has photos linked to this folder. When you remove the photos from this folder, Locus can't load them anymore. You must add the photos from the new storage to each individual point manually in the point edit dialog.

Thank you Michael. Maybe we should change this to "idea" for Locus? Because your solution is not really practical (and Locus should not prevent me from being an organised person. Any folder with more than 200 or so items/photos needs subfolders with meaningfull names.

And as I said: when hiking I like Locus showing my photos on the going but at home I browse through my gallery (of a specific holdiday) and show them to friends and sometimes I check the location by tapping the gps symbol in the gallery so that Locus shows the location the map.

Then you don't have to use Locus as your camera controlling app - make photos with the dedicated photo app that stores photos in the gallery and only set Locus to display the photos on map (content panel > geotagged photos)

I might try that but will it not slow down Locus too much? We are talking about 10 to 15 gig of pictures. Or does Locus do a smart trick here?

You don't have to display all of the pictures, select only the folders your actually need to see.

Thanks again. I know hat routine but the question was about slowing down Locus because this setting is "all or nothing" where Locus points with foto can be set like the first or the closest 100. Smaller numbers are not likely to slow down Locus.

Yes, any excessive amount of activated data can slow Locus down. Therefore, I advised to select only those folders with photos that you actually need displayed:

Wow, would you believe in many many years of using Locus I never tapped the camera symbol indicated by the red arrow in my screendump? Now I am totally happy. 34abebbe44477c1d6cf83940a9a23d1d

:D Yes, you never know in Locus Map. It's still full of surprises :)

It is still a slow process to add geotagegd photos to become pohtopoints one at a time

a method to do this in bulk would be handy, or choose photopoint photo location

if you could change this directory variable, then it would be great as I could set it to a custom directory at the start of the idea, photos organised and loads of photo points, sorted.

But the geotagged photo layer is a really great feature, keeping me from using google photos.

Yes Alistair, that's why you've put in the idea to implement - we realize that the only media folder for Locus is not user friendly.

Sorry, im forgetting what ive posted...

Ive put up a few ideas about this as well

Main issue with content>geotagged is that it takes a log time to load and while its good to look at the we often want to work on them as points afterwards.

So main workflow is

Create nonphoto points for things that dont involve a photo

If you are creating a photopoint simply to record a photo and its location

Dont

Take photos using normal camera

organise on sd card as you want

then go back to locus

just enable geotagged layer, then click on each photo in turn that you want to save,

click the create point icon bottom left in point detail and it will create a photo point from the geotagged photo

BUT

the photo will be in your desired folder, NOT in locus/data/media/photo and be correctly linked

What would be good is to easily add a group of photos as points/waypoints based on a track

ie all the photos taken between the track recording start and end times, add them all to a folder the same name as the tarck name

or add all the photos as waypoints to a track etc.

Or to filter the geotagged photos by a date range, and add all viewing as photopoints in one go

Actually this active layer stuff is really usefull. Thank you Michal for setting me on the right track. No broken links in Locus anymore. Some organising for me in the gallery and having a choice what folders to show in Locus active layer. But even with everything active (about 700 geotagged photo's), there is no lag. My wife is dragging :) around about 3000 pictures on her new Moto G5G and no sluggish behaviour there too.

And "closest points" in Locus does a nice job on the photo's too (like in the points directories).

So, we are happy hikers again.

It feels like the "old" photo points were more of a heavy load for Locus and/or the phone.

Hi Henk,

yes, that makes sense - in this case Locus does not touch the point database, it just reads the photos' EXIF with coords and doesn't work with them as with ordinary points.
