Live tracking: show own position

joeloc shared this idea 8 years ago
Completed

It might be beneficial to show a point for yourself as well during live tracking.

When you're energy saving or have spotty network coverage, your position might not update that often. I am always curious as to where the last successful update took place.

That would also allow one to easily pinpoint the last place with network coverage, in case of an emergency. It might also indicate where your buddies (or some rescue party) will start looking for you when you're in trouble.

have to quote with a small smile

"For now, we do not need feedback with requests of a new features. Own plans are already defined. "

If nothing had ever changed we'd have tails and climb in trees, rather than discuss Locus features :-)

Idea implemented. Will be available in next version for both types of Live tracking (custom, Locus).

@Menion

Will "my last position icon" be stay on screen or would it hidden after the refresh time and no connect to server?

because that will un/complete my old similar topic.

Aaah here it is. I knew when I decided to make this feature, that there were quite a lot of votes and I was surprised when I marked this topic as "completed", that it has just a so little :). Fine, thanks

3 years ago... :)

and your answer?

like "If there is no connect to the live tracking server, your own icon will never be removed until the next start of live tracking!"

- you start live tracking

- last valid (correctly send) location will be on the map

- you stop live tracking and last location disappear

No matter if you lost connection to server or not, last valid location will still be on the map (till Live tracking will be active).

Better?

nearly perfect :) thank you

Hi

I think that if you leave old positions on the map without a simple way to understand how old they are is not a real live tracking because the tracked user could be no more there.

Well, this is completely different story ...

Not so different as you think.

I tried to reach my wife out for a run some days ago. Both with live tracking enabled.

Last position acquired for my wife was at the center of a bridge. I headed to the bridge to try to reach her but I was 3km away. Every time I looked at the map the point was always still on the bridge so I thought she stopped there.

Luckily I was on the right track and when I arrived 300 meters from her, position has been updated and the I reached.

She told me she never stopped at the bridge, I was looking at a point too old on the map.

A point of live tracking on the map has a different value depending on the time it was acquired.

Hello Lorenzo, I absolutely agree, but I think it has nothing in common with current idea "Live tracking: show own position".

photo

Ok Menion probably I misunderstood the topic I read it as referred to all positions tracked and not only the own.

"last valid place" is a weird name for the point really. Shouldn't you name it like the live tracking setting? then it will also make more sense when multiple live trackings are supported.

Also... can you tag it with date and time of update somewhere in the.comment field?

photo
1

Renamed to "last shared position" as is name in settings, thanks.

Date and time of point is in it's details - there is a "Time created" value.

Hmm... I meant to use the configured Nickname in the corresponding live tracking settings. Just like it would appear on other peoples devices. If I am "joeuser" in Locus Buddy Tracking, I would think my own point should be called "joeuser" as well. And if I am "alpenzorro" on my own custom http://www.alpenzorro.de/ server, the point should be "alpenzorro'.

This will only be of much interest though if you should decide to support multiple live trackings at once. Which you should... right now I have to choose between my website and my Locus buddies.

Alternatively, could you maybe for a quick solution document the URL Syntax that Locus buddy server wants? Then I could live track to my own server and forward to Locus from there.

Understand. Currently there is anyway only a single live tracking running at once so this is not a big deal.

Direct URL to live tracking server do not exists. Connection is secured and all content is exchanged by binary objects. No public API is planned for now.

I somehow feared you'd say that. Is that also the reason for the annoying "startup procedure"? Guess a URL solution like everybody else uses was too simple :-). Https with POST would have been secure as well.

So for the forseeable future it will be either Locus buddies or iPhone buddies or own Website, no compatibility possible?

ps, sorry if that sounded a bit rude... was a little disappointed. simple http requests and simple gpx/json responses would have been the way to go. then we could have done lots of funky things... like eg immediate display on googlemaps or in googleearth... or replaying our tracks on a friend's device... or emailing a simple kml URL to our parents to find us on whatever device and tool they prefer... or god knows what... plenty possibilities with STANDARDs.

Instead, it's Locus private vendor lock-in playground without any chance of interaction. For what reason? https has security and compression as well.

flexibility and simplicity lost forever on this subject because of another overcomplicated implementation choice :/

Hi Locus Team !

Honestly, without the possibility to run Live Tracking showing the position of others on Locus linked to a private owned server (like Traccar for example) , Live Tracking Function will be unfortunately unusable and useless for us as it is simply and strictly impossible to share this datas on any type of third party server even if it offers some kind of private room.

So, personally, i really really hope that you will open the availability of using this function with our own private server,

Cheers,

Fifi.

Good day Fifi, this is completely different story isn't it? What you need is an improving of existing Live tracking solution on own private server, where Locus will also receive a location of other users, right? As I see, there is no such topic.

Good day Menion !

Yep, you're right and got it ! Something like the way you are actually work on, but with private server instead of Locus owned server. If you remember the different cases that we use Locus in nature protection, you will easily understood why, unfortunately, we don't have choice.

I talked about it in this other topic : http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/_live_waypoints_from_remote_server#comment-19190

Cheers

Understand. Nice topic with 29 votes, hmmm. Once I get rid of current tasks around addresses & DB Poi and navigation/guidance stuff, I'm sure I'll look at it. Mainly because it won't be too complicated to do something like this with cooperation with live tracking in Locus. At least I can imagine it now ...

Thanks for you answer Menion

It would be great

29 votes, huumm, maybe i could try to boost it ... ? ^_^ :) ;)
