Transfer Locus to new device

Hi,

wanted to get some help on the topic. I already read description available on this page:

http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/moving-locus-to-another-device

however still not feeling comfortable. The instruction seems quite straightforward but the first question is: does backup made using "backup all" option contains also all offline contents such as: images of geocaches, list of offline logs (found/not found with comments) etc.

The other question mark is related to the fact that currently my Locus is installed on SD card due to low internal memory but in a new device I want to settle up the whole Locus with all contents on internal memory. Does that change the procedure ??

And last question. Due to some unexpected restarts of my current device (and due to the fact that afte restart it takes time to get SD card available and couple of times I run Locus before SD card was available which created some folders also on internal memory card) I have two sets of Locus folder structures on internal and external card. When SD card is available everything is working fine but looking at the instruction and sespecially point 2:

"back up entire Locus directory (e.g. storage/emulated/0/Locus) to a PC or Dropbox etc"

should I only do that for external copy of Locus folders (as currently Locus is installed in Android on card) or should I copy both - how to handle it then?

If backup contains everything maybe I should not worry at all?

Hi,

"backup all" saves only basic information about caches including offline logs but WITHOUT images - therefore there is the step of backing up the whole Locus folder structure.

2) the new installation of Locus will search its data in the inner memory so copy everything there

3) Locus Map should work with only one directory "Locus" in your device. If there are more, it may result in database failures and losses of data. So copy the Locus directory which is defined as default in your settings only

Well, backup all worked fine for th basic stuff except the fact that I had to change some folders settings because it pointed to the external card which is not available on my new device. Unfortunately I have a feeling that copying the whole data/geocaching/ folder did not worked fine. Why? I had offline pictures for almost all of my caches but after copying it to the new device, starting application I went to my caches list and started GC offlinizer and it downloaded a lot of pictures for most of caches such as the pictures I copied were not visible. That was not that much of a problem because I could download them again, but now I;m thining if all of these copied pictures are not wasting my space because they;re not used.

Good day Kipcior,

Michal just went on small vacation so I'll try to answer instead of him.

Downloaded geocaching data are stored in Locus/data/geocaching/(cache code), so you may check here for every cache, what data are downloaded and live here. Every cache has own folder so it is clearly visible of there are any duplicate images etc. If there will be any problem, feel free to write me here ( best with attached zipped problematic geocache folder ). Thanks

Hi Menion,

yes, that is what I expected that if I just copy the contents of this folder all pictures residing there will be available in Locus. But as said after Offlinizer was started instead of information that there's nothing to download (that I would expect if he saw that all pictures are already downloaded) Locus started downloading them again. I will check if there're any duplicates but might be, that's more a question to you, that during download it replaced existing pictures. Could that be that the information which pictures are available for each cache are written somewhere apart from the data/geocaching/ folder?

EDIT:

checked couple of them and seems like there;re no duplicates. Cooult it be that it only missed some references to the pictures which were rebuild during additional download?

Hello,

there are two sources of information, from where to download images:

  • listing of cache
  • Geocaching API

In case, you don't use Geocaching API, Locus only check references images in listing itself and compare result with already downloaded images. This should be quite fast in case, images are already downloaded because there is no need to check new data over internet. In 95%, this download all possible images.

In case you use Geocaching API, Locus have to for every cache download extra information from internet, so this is slow method ( mainly for huge number of caches ).

So I can imagine that Locus downloads new images from internet in case, you now use Geocaching Live API ( in offlinizer settings ) or you had some really old caches and owner meanwhile improved listing, added some more images etc.

Last information for you to give you all keys: Locus map compare images only by it's name. So even if owner of cache, change some image but keep it's name, Locus won't download this new image if there is already older one. This is because Locus Map does not have information about image age.

Not sure if this gave you exact answer on this "problem", but at least you will have an idea, how this works.
