Geocaching map display with corrected coordinates

JohnCNA shared this problem 3 years ago
Not a Problem

I had always thought this was a Groundspeak API limitation, but it does not happen with the Groundspeak app or GCDroid. So maybe it is a Locus bug. Or???

When a geocache has corrected coordinates and the original posted coordinates are outside the map zoom area, the geocache disappears from the map. Zoom out so that both the corrected location and the original location are both within the map display area, and they both appear. Zoom in enough to only show the corrected location and the icon disappears from the map.

Hi John,

could you please make a screen video of the issue? I'm not able to simulate it according to your description. Thanks

I'm having trouble with a video but try this:

Problem only happens in Live View, cache not saved in any list.

GC724VR - update solved coordinates to N 41° 50.414', W 088° 09.880' on the web site.

View cache in Locus - Live view.

Zoom out to one mile or so.

Cache appears on map at solved location.

Zoom in quite a bit.

Cache disappears.

Zoom out.

Select Original Coordinates and set Show on Map.

Zoom out to see original posted coordinates and connecting line to solved coordinate location.

Zoom in again.

Line remains but cache icon disappears.

Hi John,

thanks for the detailed description, I was able to replicate the procedure. But not the issue - the icon disappears for a sec but when I move the map it appears as soon as the live map layer renews. Have you tried this with the latest Locus version 4.1 and 3.52?

I'm at 4.1 as well as 3.51.3 on Pro but these are not really relevant. I also have Geocaching4Locus 3.0.7. Locus has always done this. Couple years or so. I always just thought it was a Groundspeak API limitation until I noticed recently that two other apps do not do this. It does not happen when the geocache has been saved to a points list. It only happened when in Live view only.

If you're not seeing the issue I think you're not zooming in far enough. The original posted geocache location must be completely off the map before the solved location disappears. In the example I gave, things look right at about a 0.8-1.0 mile scale but it disappears around the 0.1-0.2 mile scale. When I zoom or pan, there's a brief delay and then the Live view refreshes and that's when it will disappear.

Hi John,

see yourself if I zoom too much or too little...: https://asamm.myqnapcloud.com/share.cgi?ssid=0ysV3GJ. Anyway, the icon always appears.

Well now I'm totally baffled. My behavior is different. I wonder if some setting is responsible for what I'm seeing at my end.

I've had this problem in the past too. But right now it works ok on my phone.

Since I'm hardly using Live-map, I can not say when the behaviour improved. But I'm sure some months ago this bug was still alive.

Yes, I don't use Live View all that much, either. But it is annoying when the issue crops up.

Hello JohnCNA,

Michal notified me about this problem. From your original description, it looks like a good old problem in Geocaching4Locus, caused by the problem in Geocaching API. This anyway has to confirm @Arcao , developer of Geocaching4Locus add-on.

Thanks for looking into this! It makes sense that the issue happens with G4L since that's where Live View is turned off and on.

Quick check here on help desk

In the second post is the answer from Arcao, unfortunately, it is 3 years old. Because Locus Map does not download geocaches directly, I do not know if this is already somehow solved in geocaching API or not, sorry.

Wow - what a memory. I'm impressed! 😎

I noticed that the latest version of GCDroid does not have this issue, so maybe Groundspeak has issued a way to deal with this now. Or GCD figured a way around it. Fortunately, the problem does not crop up too often.

Any way, thanks for the continued development of Locus!
