Automatic backup of v3 seems not to work as configured

Because update of Locus4 to v4.28 did render My Library unusable in v3, I wanted my v3 to go back to the state of before v4.28 update – but realized auto backup of v3 did not work as expected 🙁 It is set to enabled, complete backup, repeat every 5 days, keep 18 backup files – but only one "<timestamp>_Locus_Map_Classic.zip" is in backup folder, and it's from after v4.28 installation.

1) Can the 10 files "<timestamp>_Locus_Map.zip" from before update to v4.28 contain v3 backups or only v4 backups? BTW, v4 has automatic backup enabled with 10 backup files.

2) With the very limited search functions of this system, I found the topic https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/auto-backup-does-not-work which is closed, no comments possible, last entries I see are that the problem still exists. Also https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/21926-automatic-backup-does-not-start is closed, no confirmation by the affected users that auto backup was fixed. Do you find confirmations that auto backup works in v3?

I've noticed that automatic updates in v3 and V4 occasionally stop. Often when Google Drive does an update. After that you have to log out and log in again in Gdrive. That's why I check everything every 4 weeks.

As I understand it, you switched from V3 to V4newLibery. Most switch from v4 to v4

Thank you for trying to help – I do a backup onto local storage, so login issues to GDrive or the like can't be the reason.

"Switch" is not really matching. I did and would like to continue to use v3 and v4 in conjunction, because v4 crashes so often that v3 is required when I need a reliable map app, while v4 is for testing and using the new features. More details.

Hi Georg,

unfortunately, I have no idea why there are no backups of LM3C in your backup folder - what storage do you use for the backups?

1) you can use LM4 backup from before the data migration for restoring in LM3C

2) the first thread is 7 years old and further communication continued in a private ticket. The second one was closed as the user did not get in touch for three years after having promised to test the advised procedure.

Is this issue still happening?

Yes.

/Locus/backup/auto contains 10 files <Date>_Locus_Maps.zip and 0 files containing "classic" in the name.

In the app, backup manager tells automatic backup is enabled, last backup 2025-04-06, repeat every 5 days, keep last 18 backup files – even while I looked this up, so backup manager was in front, no backup was created. I disabled and re-enabled automatic backup, waited few minutes with Locus3 in foreground, but no backup file was created.

The automatic backup doesn't start immediately when you set it up. I have set it up myself for a test so we'll see tomorrow if it works or not. But the backup system wasn't touched for ages in LMClassic so there is no reason why it shouldn't work.

Yesterday evening, an automatic backup file was created 👍 I'll watch it for a while and report back whether it was a one-time or ongoing success.

As it did not work before for months but needed some action (deactivate+ reactivate?), something is not reliable.

We have registered a problem when the backup directory is set on the external SD card - do you also have this setup?

No, I use internal storage for backup, SD only for maps and elevation data.
