FlightAware Plugin/route from flight number
When taking the plane to go some places, I like to record the trace to get stars like elevation, etc, set a point on the target airport to get ETA estimates, etc. I would like to go one step further and actually visualize the flight path vs the planned route (got to find something to do on long flights!).
For example, let's take this flight:
http://fr.flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL609
The route is composed of the following RNAV waypoints
AML GINYA WYNGS RAMAY Q72 HACKS J149 ROD WATSN2
The web site allows decoding the routes into coordinates
http://fr.flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL609/history/20141101/1345Z/KDCA/KORD/route
This generates a table like the one below
KDCA AML GINYA WYNGS RAMAY Q72 HACKS J149 ROD WATSN2 KORDNameLatitudeLongitudeDistance from originDistance from destinationTypeKDCA38.8519163-77.03769890611Origin AirportAML38.9347222-77.466666724588VOR-DME (NAVAID)GINYA38.9425139-77.680072235577Reporting Point[...]
This may be a good plugin idea for locus, as it is possible to get an API key from the site to pull the data in XML/json
http://flightaware.com/commercial/flightxml/
Being a PRO user, this could be a pro feature that opens the door to many possibilities like 3D compass that shows the actual location vs next waypoint, etc.
Good day Sebastien,
there is many possible way, where Locus developing may lead, unfortunately, "Air" navigation is not on a list of top priorities. I'll leave this topic open for possible votes, but please keep in mind, that primary Locus function is navigation for hike & bike trips. Thanks for understanding.
